The other woman had her back turned. Her silhouette looked unsettlingly familiar.
Winifred took a small paper packet from the woman and quickly slipped it into her designer bag. After checking her surroundings to ensure no one was watching, she whispered something in a low voice.
The woman nodded and turned to leave.
Instinctively taking a half-step back, Seraphina concealed herself in the shadows of the corner.
She had no desire to stumble into Winifred's shady dealings. Whatever Dominic's mother was up to, it wasn't her problem.
She wanted zero involvement.
Once Winifred walked away, Seraphina stepped out, took a deep breath, and continued toward the exit.
Through the glass panes, she caught sight of the driveway.
The woman who had handed off the packet was hurrying toward a parked car. As she stepped up to the vehicle, she glanced back over her shoulder.
Seraphina's pupils contracted sharply.
Stella Turner.
Seraphina would recognize her even if she were reduced to ash.
She was the one who had drugged her all those years ago...
Wait. Stella's family had been dealing in pharmaceuticals for generations.
Why would Winifred be secretly meeting with her?
A cold chill crept up Seraphina's spine, freezing her in place.
That single spiked drink had forced her into bed with Dominic, resulting in her pregnancy and permanently derailing her entire life.
If Winifred had ties to Stella, did that mean the events of that night were...
Her heart slammed against her ribs.
Taking a ragged breath, she forced her surging emotions down and turned back toward the manor.
She needed to know exactly what Winifred planned to do with that packet.
Reaching the end of the corridor, she spotted Winifred pulling a maid aside and shoving the paper packet into her hands.
The maid was someone Seraphina recognized perfectly: Mrs. Lloyd, the staff member solely responsible for the matriarch's daily care.
Seraphina's heart sank like a stone.
Seraphina recognized it instantly. It was the matriarch's personal soup bowl.
Due to her frail stomach, the old woman drank a bowl of herbal soup after every meal.
Seraphina gripped the doorframe tightly.
She didn't know what that powder was, but it was undoubtedly lethal.
The kitchen was otherwise empty. Her eyes narrowing, Seraphina pulled out her phone and used an encrypted number to call Mrs. Lloyd.
Using a voice-altering app, she mimicked the head butler's voice, ordering the maid to immediately fetch some frozen pork from the walk-in freezer in the adjacent pantry.
Mrs. Lloyd hesitated, glancing nervously at the soup, but ultimately agreed and scurried out of the room.
Seraphina let out a sharp breath.
Shoving her phone back into her pocket, she slipped inside, dumped the contaminated soup down the sink, poured a fresh batch into the bowl, and quietly slipped away.
Thank God she had spent so much time working in the estate. She knew everyone's contact information and knew for a fact that Mrs. Lloyd was terrified of crossing the head butler.
Plus, an order to defrost meat in the middle of a massive banquet preparation was the perfect alibi.
