"You're right about one thing. That piece of trash would never spend a dime on me."
"But we're about to sign our divorce papers, and I'm entitled to half his net worth. If you take me as your hostage, you're essentially securing half his fortune."
Owen hesitated for a moment, but eventually shook his head.
"I don't harm the people who save my life."
He pointed toward the stairwell. "Leave. Because if my boss gets here, you won't be able to walk out of here even if you want to."
Lily thrashed against her restraints, massive tears streaming down her face.
"Mom! Save me..."
A sharp, agonizing pain seized Seraphina's chest.
"I'm not going anywhere."
She locked eyes with Owen. "If you don't release her, I'm staying right here."
Owen's expression darkened. "Don't push me."
Just then, a gruff, gravelly voice echoed from the stairwell.
"None of you are going anywhere!"
A hulking figure emerged from the shadows. The man was built like a tank, his eyes murky and undeniably ruthless.
Seraphina tensed.
The man's facial features were incredibly similar to Drake's, only slightly paler.
Given his arrogance, this had to be the 'boss' Owen had mentioned.
Barrett walked forward, his gaze locked onto Seraphina.
"You must be Ms. Sinclair. You killed my brother, and we still haven't settled that debt."
"However, I know who you are. You're a top-tier scientific mind, which is exactly what we need. So, I'll let the past slide—but you're coming with us."
With a flick of his wrist, he signaled his men.
Four men in black suits closed in, fully intent on grabbing Seraphina.
In a blur of motion, Seraphina ducked, drove an elbow into one man's ribs, swept another's legs out from under him, and quickly neutralized all four attackers.
But in the chaos, someone managed to press a combat knife against Lily's throat.
Seraphina froze completely.
Lily was trembling violently, entirely paralyzed by fear.
"Don't touch her!"
Seraphina raised both hands high, fully surrendering.
Several thugs instantly lunged at her, raining down merciless blows.
Within moments, Seraphina was battered and bruised, fighting just to stay upright.
Lily sobbed uncontrollably, gasping for air as she struggled desperately against the men holding her down.
Simultaneously, Gideon and his tactical unit breached the perimeter of the building.
They silently advanced to the tenth floor. Peering through the cracks, Gideon immediately spotted Seraphina.
Calculating the exact moment, he gave the order.
"Move!"
Gunfire erupted in a deafening, coordinated barrage.
Barrett's men panicked, scattering in absolute chaos.
The deafening roar of gunfire filled the air as the tenth floor was engulfed in muzzle flashes and smoke.
Lying on the ground, Seraphina seized the momentary distraction. She sprang up, disarmed the nearest thug, and drove his own knife into him with a fatal strike.
She yanked Lily out of the chair, sliced through her bindings, and was just about to carry her toward the exit when she saw it.
A bomb was strapped beneath the chair!
Seraphina's pupils shrank to pinpricks.
She pulled Lily tight against her chest and screamed at the top of her lungs, "Bomb! Fall back!"
