The little girl's face was completely taut. "Daddy, I don't want to go back with you today."

Dominic's hand froze in mid-air.

"I want to stay with Mommy."

As Lily spoke, she turned and grabbed Seraphina's hand. "Mommy, I don't want to go back to Daddy's place tonight. I want to stay with you, okay?"

Seraphina looked down at the pleading little face staring up at her.

She smiled and squeezed Lily's small hand. "Okay."

Lily's eyes immediately lit up, a bright smile blooming across her face.

Seraphina held her hand and turned to leave.

Dominic stood rooted to the spot, watching the mother and daughter's retreating figures get swallowed by the night, his eyes unreadable.

Cynthia stood beside him, grinding her teeth in silent fury as she watched Seraphina and Lily walk further and further away.

It wasn't fair.
