The subordinates standing behind Gideon instantly shook their heads, replying in unison, "We didn't notify anyone."
Exchanging confused glances, Dominic's men also spoke up. "No one on our end either..."
Seraphina shifted her piercing gaze back to Cynthia, her voice like cracking ice. "No one told you. So how exactly did you know Lily was abducted in the middle of the night?"
Cynthia began to stutter helplessly. "I... I've always paid close attention to Lily. Whenever anything happens to her, I naturally find out."
"How did you find out?"
Seraphina cut her off sharply. "Spit it out. Where did you get this information? Who told you?"
Hammered by the rapid-fire interrogation, all the color drained from Cynthia's face.
"I... I..."
"Seraphina!"
A second later, her voice hitched with a pitiful sob, her eyes reddening at an impossible speed. "What are you implying? Are you saying I'm the one who hurt Lily? Do you even realize how absurd that is? Even if you're angry, even if you can't accept that Dominic is divorcing you, you can't just throw out these baseless accusations to frame me!"
She wept with agonizing sorrow. Dominic finally snapped out of his daze, taking a protective step forward to shield Cynthia behind him.
"Seraphina, that's enough. Are you seriously suspecting Cynthia? What right do you have to question her? She cares about Lily! Is it a crime for her to be concerned?"
"While you abandoned Lily these past few days, Cynthia is the one who's been taking care of her. I've seen firsthand how good she is to Lily, and you have the audacity to interrogate her now?"
Seraphina froze for a fraction of a second, unable to find an immediate comeback.
She truly had been absent from Lily's life recently.
But it blew her mind to think that she had dedicated five entire years to raising Lily—cooking, cleaning, staying up all night nursing her through fierce fevers, breaking her own heart out of worry—yet she had never received a single word of appreciation.
Yet Cynthia had merely cooked the girl a few meals, and was now being hailed as a paragon of devotion.
She balled her hands into tight fists, forcefully shoving down the bitter ache rising in her throat, and forced herself to stay perfectly calm.
She hadn't just discovered what kind of repulsive hypocrite Dominic was today.
