Gideon Cole's fingers curled slightly at his sides.
Seraphina Sinclair noticed the shift in his expression, a sudden knot forming in her stomach.
"What is it? Still no leads?"
Gideon shook his head, his features softening just a fraction.
"No, we have a lead."
He pulled out a chair and sat down. "Current evidence points to an international crime lord. His real name is unknown, but everyone in the underworld calls him 'Corvus.'"
Seraphina's pupils dilated.
Corvus.
She had heard the name. He was an incredibly powerful overseas kingpin with a highly sophisticated syndicate responsible for unspeakable crimes. The authorities had been tracking him for years, desperately gathering evidence in hopes of dismantling his empire once and for all.
Seraphina squeezed her daughter's hand tightly.
"Why would someone like that target my five-year-old daughter?"
Gideon's expression darkened.
"He runs an extensive, deeply entrenched trafficking ring. Lily must have caught their attention."
A chill ran down Seraphina's spine, and a violent tremor wrecked through her body.
Gideon patted her hand gently. "It's over now. She's safe. We will never let them near Lily again."
Seraphina took a deep breath, her gaze turning lethal.
"So Cynthia Ross is one of his people too?"
Gideon shook his head.
"Our investigation shows she has absolutely no connection to this specific incident."
Seraphina's fists clenched so hard her knuckles turned white.
"No connection? I don't buy that for a second."
"What about Lauren Lennox? Did the interrogations get anything out of her?"
