Gideon pressed his lips into a thin line, his gaze resting on her face without confirming or denying.
But to Seraphina, his silence was a glaring confirmation.
She let out a breath of pure amusement. "Honestly, that's perfect. It must be destiny. They are clearly made for each other. If he got it wrong, let him stay wrong. I hope they're locked together forever."
There wasn't a single ounce of bitterness in her eyes; she was utterly at peace with it.
Gideon glanced at her, a faint smirk playing on his lips as his own expression relaxed.
The car soon turned into the older district and glided to a smooth stop outside her apartment building.
"We're here," Gideon said, unbuckling his seatbelt.
Seraphina stepped out of the car, but he called out to her before she could close the door.
"Just because you're discharged doesn't mean your leg is fully healed. Don't push yourself too hard. Get plenty of rest."
Seraphina nodded, standing by the open door and waving at him. "Go handle your work. I heard your phone buzzing the entire ride here."
Gideon gave a curt nod. The window slowly rolled up, and the car executed a smooth U-turn, vanishing into the night.
Seraphina turned and walked upstairs, pulling out her keys to unlock the door.
The lights were on inside. The caretaker was still there, the apartment was immaculately clean, and the scent of a freshly cooked meal drifted through the air.
Standing in the middle of the living room, Seraphina suddenly felt a lump in her throat.
"Thank you for everything, really."
"Oh, it's nothing at all," the caretaker replied cheerfully as she set the dishes on the dining table. "Mr. Cole paid me double to make sure you're well taken care of. He said you just got out of the hospital and shouldn't be left alone."
Seraphina's grip on her fork faltered for a second.
Just as she thought.
She took a quiet bite of her food, making a mental note to pay Gideon back the moment she got the chance.
She was already incredibly grateful he had found such a capable and attentive caretaker; she refused to take advantage of his generosity.
After dinner, she took a quick shower and lay in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling for a while before finally closing her eyes. She slept through the night without a single dream.
She rested at home for the next two days. Her leg wasn't fully healed, but she could finally walk without a limp.
Early the next morning, she changed into a crisp button-down shirt, grabbed her bag, and headed straight to the hospital.
