Gideon shifted to intercept her, but she slipped right past him, her strides fast and furious. In seconds, she had closed the distance.
Before Winifred even registered her presence, Seraphina raised her hand and delivered a vicious, echoing slap across her face.
"Slap!"
The sharp crack rang out, silencing the entire corridor.
Clutching her cheek, Winifred stood frozen as if struck by lightning, her lips trembling but unable to form a single word.
Dominic was equally stunned.
He stared at his ex-wife in utter disbelief. "Seraphina! Are you insane? She's an elder!"
"What kind of elder is she?"
She turned to him, her eyes practically radiating frost. "At best, she's an old woman exploiting her age to act like trash."
"I'll say this right now: if anyone says another word against my daughter, I don't care who they are, I will ruin them!"
She shifted her lethal stare back to Winifred. "Did you hear me?"
The hallway was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.
Holding her burning cheek, Winifred was too terrified to make a sound.
Dominic's eyes darkened. Swallowing whatever he was going to say, he grabbed his mother's arm. "Mom, let's go."
She stumbled along for two steps as he dragged her.
"Stop right there," Seraphina's voice commanded from behind.
He halted and looked back.
"Apologize."
Seraphina bored holes into the older woman's skull. "Apologize to me, and apologize to my daughter."
Winifred whirled around, her face flashing violently between red and white. "Are you out of your mind? You want me to apologize to you? And apologize to a comatose vegetable?"
The second the word left her mouth, Seraphina's eyelashes fluttered dangerously, her gaze turning lethal.
