"Okay, I'll listen to you, Mommy."

She murmured, her heavy eyelids drooping before fluttering open again. "Mommy, are you still going to come take care of me every day like before?"

Her eyes were swimming with anxiety and desperate hope, terrified of hearing a rejection.

Seraphina didn't answer right away.

"You just need to sleep right now."

The little girl's expression fell, the corners of her mouth turning down.

Seraphina's heart ached. She hadn't wanted to have this conversation so soon; the child was still too young and fragile.

But seeing that crestfallen look, she pulled up a chair and sat down.

"Lily, your dad and I are divorced," she began evenly, "and you are in his custody. That was the choice you made."

The little girl's eyes immediately flooded with tears, a sob tearing from her throat. "Mommy, I was wrong."

Seraphina took a slow, deep breath.

"Everyone has to take responsibility for their own choices," she said gently but firmly. "But he is still your father. Even if you live with him, he won't mistreat you."

Huge teardrops rolled down Lily's cheeks, splashing onto the sheets.

She sniffled loudly. "Mommy, can I still come visit you?"

Reaching out, Seraphina cupped the top of her soft head.

"Of course you can," she said, her tone softening considerably. "Even though I'm divorced from your dad, you are still my child. You can come find me whenever you want."

She grabbed a tissue, carefully wiping the tears from her daughter's face.

"Dry your tears. While you're in the hospital, I'll still be here taking care of you every single day."

Lily nodded, as if accepting a harsh truth while simultaneously letting go of a massive weight.

She sniffled, stopping her tears, and obediently lay back down.

Tucking her in again, Seraphina added, "Your body is still too weak. Heavy meals will make you sick right now. Don't worry, just focus on healing up. Give it a couple more days, and I'll cook for you."
