Seraphina took Lily back to her apartment.
The moment they walked in, Lily kicked off her shoes and padded across the floor barefoot.
"Mom, which bed is yours?" she asked.
Seraphina pointed to the master bedroom.
Lily dashed over, threw herself onto the mattress, and rolled around.
"It's so soft." She buried her face in the pillows.
Seraphina walked over and scooped the girl out from under the covers. "Go take a shower first."
Lily nodded obediently, climbed out of bed, and followed Seraphina into the bathroom.
While Seraphina ran the bathwater, Lily stood right beside her, watching.
When she stepped away to grab a towel, Lily shuffled two steps after her.
When she turned to get pajamas, Lily followed again.
Seraphina glanced back. Lily's lips were pressed tight, her eyes glued to her mother, refusing to be more than a foot away.
Seraphina handed her the pajamas. "I'm not leaving. I'll be right outside the door. Just call me when you're done."
Lily nodded.
Seraphina stepped out, leaving the door cracked open.
A little while later, Lily emerged in her pajamas, her hair dripping wet.
Seraphina grabbed a towel and began drying her hair. Lily sat perfectly still, tilting her head up and staring without blinking, as if terrified her mother would vanish the second she closed her eyes.
Once her hair was dry, Seraphina turned off the lights and climbed into bed.
Lily immediately rolled over, wrapped her arms around Seraphina's waist, and burrowed into her chest.
"Mom," she whispered.
"Yeah."
Lily stayed quiet for a moment. "I want to live with you all the time from now on."
Seraphina kept her eyes open in the dark, saying nothing.
"I'll be super good," Lily added. "I won't make you mad like before."
Her voice had that sweet, soft innocence typical of young children, but every word was laced with utter sincerity.
Seraphina looked down. In the darkness, all she could see was a messy mop of hair.
Five years old. Not exactly old enough to understand everything, but no longer a toddler either.
She could sense the changes in her daughter, just as clearly as she remembered every time she had been bruised and broken during that marriage.
