"It was you. You were the one who saved my life."
Seraphina turned slightly, glancing over her shoulder at him.
Standing barely a step behind her, Dominic's chest heaved with ragged breaths. "Why didn't you... why didn't you ever tell me?"
Seraphina let out a dry, mocking chuckle.
She lifted her gaze, looking at Dominic with chilling serenity.
"How exactly was I supposed to tell you? Even if I had shouted it from the rooftops, would you have believed me?"
Dominic's Adam's apple bobbed aggressively. He opened his mouth to argue, but her next words mercilessly shut him down.
"And quite frankly, even if you had believed me, so what?"
Her tone was terrifyingly flat, devoid of a single ripple of emotion.
Dominic took a desperate half-step forward, his voice cracking. "If I had believed you, I would have treated you right. We could have actually made this work."
Seraphina looked at him, and suddenly, a genuine smile broke across her face.
"So, whether or not you treat a woman with basic decency is entirely conditional on whether she saved your life?"
She tilted her head, her gaze lazily raking over his devastated features.
"Don't be so pathetic, Dominic."
With that, she broke eye contact, turned back around, and walked through the doors.
Standing nearby, Lily looked up at Dominic with wide eyes.
"Dad, you're pathetic."
Dropping the ultimate finishing blow, the little girl turned and trotted off, grabbing Seraphina's hand as they walked away.
Dominic stood frozen in place, utterly paralyzed as he watched the woman and child slowly disappear into the distance.
The trio walked out of the hotel entrance and slid into Chelsea's car.
The second the tires hit the street, the sky split open.
A torrential downpour unleashed instantly, heavy, violent raindrops hammering the pavement.
Standing perfectly still behind a marble pillar at the hotel entrance, Dominic watched the taillights of Chelsea's car vanish into the blinding sheet of rain.
His mind was violently replaying the look in Seraphina's eyes just moments ago.
It had been so cold.
Utterly empty.
There wasn't even a shred of hatred left.
She had looked at him like he was absolutely nothing but a stranger on the street.
Dominic's hands balled into tight fists.
A crushing, suffocating agony clawed at his chest.
