He stared at Seraphina's indifferent face, Barnaby's words echoing relentlessly inside his skull.
She threw the driftwood.
She ran to get the adults.
Her leg was sliced open and bleeding.
She kept screaming, "Save them first, save them first!"
And Cynthia? She had been wearing a pink dress, standing perfectly dry on the riverbank, clutching a lifesaver.
He had never forgotten that summer. He remembered sinking to the bottom, the muddy river water suffocating him, the grit filling his mouth. Right before he lost consciousness, he had seen a piece of driftwood hit the surface of the water, sending a massive splash into the air.
He had fought with every ounce of his dying strength to grab it.
Later, when he was finally dragged to safety, he had drifted in and out of consciousness. Through the haze, he remembered seeing a tiny, soaking wet silhouette being pulled away into the distance, blood dripping steadily down her leg.
He had always assumed that silhouette belonged to Cynthia.
Because Cynthia had personally looked him in the eye and told him it was her.
He had never bothered to ask if she had a scar on her leg.
He just believed her.
And he had believed her for years.
Watching Dominic's expression completely shatter piece by piece, the last thread of Cynthia's sanity finally snapped.
Unable to hold it in a second longer, she violently whirled on Seraphina.
"Are you happy now, Seraphina?! You deliberately chose my engagement party to expose this ancient history just to humiliate me in front of everyone! Admit it!"
Her chest heaved frantically, her eyes bloodshot and unhinged. "You despise me for taking Dominic! You hate that I'm the one standing beside him! So you spent all this time plotting to destroy me tonight, you—"
"Are you even worth the effort?"
Seraphina lifted her chin, her gaze sweeping lazily over Cynthia's face with a detachment bordering on sheer apathy.
"You aren't nearly important enough for me to waste brain cells plotting against."
She turned her back on Cynthia and offered a polite nod to the matriarch. "Mrs. Lockwood, I'll be taking my leave now. Please take care of your health."
Old Mrs. Lockwood opened her mouth to speak, but the words failed her. She simply nodded.
Seraphina then turned to Barnaby and the Westwood relatives with a warm smile. "Barnaby, uncles, I'm heading out. Let's catch up properly next time."
