Seraphina sighed softly.
Lily and Phoebe had already been escorted by a server to a smaller table nearby. The two girls were beaming as they dug into their beautifully plated kids' meals.
Seraphina sat down, feeling a bit helpless as she took in the extravagant setup.
"Did you really have to go this far just to ask for a favor?"
Gideon sat across from her and poured her a glass of red wine from the decanter.
"If we're going to act, we might as well commit."
He raised his glass in a silent toast.
Seraphina took the glass and took a small sip.
Just then, a server approached and placed a velvet box right next to Seraphina's hand.
Gideon gestured with his chin. "Open it."
Seraphina cast him a look and lifted the lid.
Inside lay a stunning brooch. A flawless emerald sat in the center of a platinum setting, encircled by crushed diamonds.
With her background as a jewelry designer, Seraphina instantly recognized its astronomical value.
She snapped the box shut and pushed it back. "This is too expensive. I can't accept it."
"It's cheap," Gideon said, making no move to take it back.
Seraphina was speechless.
Gideon had already pulled out his phone, snapping a picture of the candlelit table and the velvet box beside her hand.
Then he stood up, walked over to her side, and leaned down. Holding the phone up high, he captured her profile and the sharp line of his own jaw in the frame.
"Look at the camera."
Seraphina instinctively looked up just as the shutter clicked.
Gideon lowered his phone, quickly edited the post, opened his social media, and hit send.
Seraphina pulled out her own phone to check.
Gideon's post consisted of just one photo—the selfie they had just taken—with a two-word caption: It's her.
Likes were already pouring in.
Seraphina looked up at him. "Can your family see this?"
"Yes."
"Aren't you worried they'll take it seriously?"
Gideon slipped the phone back into his pocket, sat back down, and methodically cut his steak.
"It's best if they do."
Seraphina's hand paused on her fork.
