He stood frozen as the wind blew from the end of the street, filling his jacket.
His chest felt completely hollowed out.
His phone vibrated in his pocket.
He pulled it out to see Cynthia's name glowing on the screen.
With a quick swipe of his thumb, he rejected the call.
The screen went black.
He shoved the phone back into his pocket, looked up at the empty intersection, and closed his eyes.
The wind continued to howl, and he just stood there for a very long time.
On the road, Gideon sat in the passenger seat as his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen and answered, "Mom."
Whatever the person on the other end said caused Gideon's brow to slowly furrow.
"I told you, I'm not in a rush."
"..."
"No one caught my eye."
"..."
"Enough. We'll talk about this when I get back."
He hung up, tossed the phone onto the center console, and tapped his fingers against his knee, his expression as cold as frost.
In the back seat, Phoebe leaned close to Seraphina's ear, lowering her voice.
"Auntie... I mean, Seraphina, I have a secret."
Seraphina turned to look at her.
Phoebe blinked innocently. "My grandma is trying to set Gideon up again. This time it's some heiress. He hates it. She was definitely nagging him just now."
Seraphina paused.
She glanced up at Gideon in the front seat.
The man's jawline was tense, and the rearview mirror caught the faint layer of irritation in his eyes.
So even he wasn't immune to being pressured into marriage.
Seraphina looked away, a nearly imperceptible smile touching her lips.
The car pulled up to the entrance of a lavish restaurant.
