Laurel Heights.
Seraphina was woken up by noises coming from the kitchen.
She threw on a cardigan and walked out, only to find a middle-aged woman bustling around the kitchen. A lavish spread was already laid out on the dining table.
There was warm oatmeal, fresh pastries, some light sides, and a steaming cup of artisan tea.
Hearing footsteps, Martha turned around and smiled. "Ms. Sinclair, you're awake."
Seraphina recognized her immediately; she was the caregiver who had looked after her when she was hospitalized.
"What are you doing here?"
"Mr. Cole sent me." Martha wiped her hands on a towel. "He said I'll be taking care of you and Lily full-time from now on, so you won't have to worry about the household when you're busy with work."
Seraphina's brow twitched.
She grabbed her phone, opened her messages with Gideon, and quickly typed: What is the meaning of this?
He replied instantly: A thank you gift.
Seraphina: ?
Gideon: Thank you for helping me out. It's just a basic token of gratitude.
Seraphina stared at the screen and rubbed her temples.
She typed back: Not necessary. Take Martha back.
Gideon ignored the text and simply called her instead.
Seraphina answered, but the voice that came through the speaker belonged to someone else entirely.
"Seraphina!"
Clara's hearty laugh blasted through the phone.
"Gideon is over here helping me out! He showed up first thing in the morning to fix the water pipes in the yard. He's covered in mud, and I told him to take a break, but he absolutely refused. This boy is just too genuine..."
Seraphina was stunned.
Clara kept talking on the other end, "Seraphina, Gideon told me all about you two. That's wonderful. This boy is honest, reliable, an absolutely top-tier choice..."
"Mom..." Seraphina's frown deepened.
Clara laughed warmly, "Alright, alright, I know you're shy. I won't say another word. As long as you're happy, I'm happy."
She hung up the phone.
Seraphina quickly typed to Gideon: What exactly did you tell my mother?
Gideon replied swiftly: The truth.
