Dominic stared at the evidence, his gaze hardening by the second.
His expression was entirely unreadable, his lips pressed into a razor-thin line.
After a long pause.
He leaned back, sinking deeply into his leather chair.
"So what exactly about you is even real?"
His voice was a mere whisper, thick with absolute numbness, as if he were interrogating the screen, or perhaps interrogating himself.
No one answered.
He stared back at the email, a mocking, self-deprecating smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
He reached for the desk phone and punched the intercom button.
"Suspend all of Cynthia's operations immediately. Put a hard stop on every project she's currently involved in. Cite an internal audit as the reason, but I want her completely locked out by the end of the day."
The assistant hesitated for a split second before responding briskly.
"Understood, Boss."
Dominic slammed the receiver down.
He sat in silence, staring out the massive window for a very long time.
Cynthia was woken up by the sunlight streaming across her bed.
She rolled over, blindly reaching for the phone on her nightstand, her eyelids feeling too heavy to open.
She had pushed herself to the absolute limit over the past few days.
She had practically shattered her own pride to manipulate Dominic into coming back to her.
Fortunately, all the suffering had paid off.
So today, she finally allowed herself to relax, doing absolutely nothing but sleeping in.
She needed to look radiant and flawless. When Dominic came to visit her later, she wanted to be the absolute picture of perfection.
A triumphant smile touched her lips as her fingers finally grasped the phone.
The moment the screen lit up, she instinctively checked her messages.
Nothing from Dominic.
She pursed her lips, feeling a slight sting of disappointment, but quickly brushed it off. He was busy. He rarely texted anyway.
She exited the app and was about to put the phone down when a new text notification popped up on the screen.
