Friday morning, she was dropping Lily off at kindergarten.

"What is it?" Seraphina crouched down.

Lily mumbled softly, "Mom, we have to turn in our family assignment next week."

"The teacher said it's a... Family Cycling Event. Both Mom and Dad have to go."

Lily's eyes sparkled briefly before dimming just as fast. "It's a bike ride by the beach. The whole family has to do it together."

Seraphina's hand paused.

Lily's voice dropped even lower. "All the other kids have done it, but I never have. Before... before, whenever you asked Dad, he never went."

A sharp ache gripped Seraphina's chest.

She looked at her daughter's tentative gaze—filled with desperate longing, yet so terrified of being rejected.

She remembered all those years she took Lily to school events by herself. The other kids held their dad's hand on one side and their mom's on the other. Lily only ever had her.

She had brought it up to Dominic before, and he would either coldly declare he was busy, or simply ignore her calls entirely.

"Mom will go with you," Seraphina said.

Lily's eyes lit up instantly. "Really?"

"Yeah."

But a second later, Lily added, "Can Dad come too? The teacher said Mom and Dad both have to be there."

Seraphina fell silent.

Seeing her hesitation, Lily's eyes quickly welled up with tears. "Mom... all the other kids get to go with their moms and dads. I never have. I just want... I just want it to happen at least once."

Tears began spilling down her cheeks as she spoke.

Seraphina took a deep breath, pushing down her intense reluctance, and wiped the tears from Lily's face.

"Okay. We'll all go together."

Lily beamed through her tears and threw herself into Seraphina's arms. "You're the best, Mom!"

That afternoon, Seraphina went to pick Lily up from school.
