Tristan glanced at her, seemingly finding her humor amusing, and made no effort to stop her.
So, bizarrely enough, the two of them genuinely started drinking together.
On the other side of the room, Gideon led Seraphina toward the buffet tables.
It was quieter here, the lighting mellow, and the long tables were lined with exquisite hors d'oeuvres.
Seraphina had been running around all afternoon, only to be ambushed the second she walked back in. It was only now that she finally realized how hungry she was.
Gideon seemed to have noticed long before. He grabbed a plate and skillfully selected a few light dishes that perfectly suited her taste.
Watching his effortless movements, Seraphina couldn't help but say, "I can do it myself."
Gideon simply handed her the filled plate. "Eat something first to settle your stomach."
Seraphina looked down.
It was exactly the kind of food she preferred.
Steamed shrimp, a light mushroom side dish, and a sweet yam pastry.
She hesitated for a second, that subtle, fluttering awkwardness surfacing in her chest again.
Gideon was normally a man of few words, and his demeanor toward outsiders was so cold it bordered on unapproachable. Yet, whenever he took care of her, he was always shockingly attentive.
Seraphina took a bite of the yam pastry; the sweetness was mild, exactly the way she liked it.
As she ate, Gideon stood quietly beside her. Noticing a smudge, he smoothly reached for a napkin nearby.
Before Seraphina could process what was happening, he had already lifted his hand to wipe a tiny drop of sauce from her fingertips.
She reflexively pulled her hand back a fraction. "Gideon."
"Hm?"
He looked down at her, his expression perfectly calm.
Struck speechless by his intense gaze, Seraphina could only murmur, "I can do it myself."
Gideon tossed the napkin aside. "I know."
He knew she was capable, yet he still wanted to take care of it for her.
Seraphina's heart skipped a completely irrational beat, and she quickly looked down to focus on her food.
