"I brought everything."
"Water?"
"In my backpack."
"What about for yourself?"
Seraphina paused. Come to think of it, she really had only packed Lily's water bottle.
Gideon pulled a bottle of water from the side pocket of his backpack and handed it to her.
Seraphina took it, unscrewed the cap, and took a sip. The tips of her ears felt slightly warm.
Once the hike began, Gideon stayed constantly by their side.
When Lily got tired of walking, he hoisted her onto his shoulders;
When Lily was thirsty, he passed her the water bottle;
When Lily saw some wildflowers by the path and wanted to pick them, he crouched down and picked them for her.
Seraphina trailed behind, watching scene after scene unfold, unable to describe the complex mix of emotions churning in her heart.
Normally, Gideon was so cold to people it bordered on abrasive, yet with Lily, he was so remarkably patient he seemed like an entirely different person.
Along the trail, some of the other children couldn't resist asking Lily who this incredibly handsome man was.
Lily puffed out her little chest proudly. "This is my Uncle Gideon."
Seraphina couldn't help but laugh out loud. The kid certainly owned it.
Gideon seemed immensely pleased to be acknowledged by Lily like this, the curve of his lips deepening into a genuine smile.
During a rest break, Gideon pulled out his phone, snapped a photo of Lily eating her crackers, and then turned to Seraphina.
"Stand next to her."
Seraphina blinked. "For what?"
"A photo."
Before Seraphina could even react, Lily had already run over and grabbed her hand. "Mom, let's take one together!"
Gideon pressed the shutter a few times. Then, he asked someone passing by to take a photo of the three of them together.
In the photo, Seraphina was holding Lily's hand, her eyes remarkably gentle.
Lily was looking up, smiling so brightly her eyes crinkled into little crescents.
Gideon stood tall right behind them, radiating a powerful, undeniable sense of possession over them both.
Gideon glanced at the photo and uploaded it directly to his social media.
The caption was just two words: "Hiking today."
...
Meanwhile, down in the city, inside a hospital room.
