By the time the two walked out of the restaurant, the sky had grown dark.
Gideon opened the car door for her, hovering his hand over the frame to protect her head.
Seraphina got in and looked down to fasten her seatbelt.
The interior of the car was quiet, save for the soft hum of the air conditioning.
She turned her head to look out the window, watching the neon lights blur past one by one.
Upon arriving outside her apartment building, Seraphina unbuckled her seatbelt.
"Thanks for bringing me home."
Gideon gave a soft murmur of acknowledgment, stepped out, and walked around to the trunk.
He pulled out all the shopping bags they had accumulated that day.
Seraphina reached out to take them. "I can carry them myself."
Gideon sidestepped her hands. "I'll carry them up for you."
Seraphina glanced at him and didn't argue further.
They walked into the elevator one after the other.
The mirrored walls of the elevator reflected their figures. One was slender and quiet, the other tall and commanding.
Seraphina suddenly felt the scene was slightly surreal.
She averted her gaze, staring fixedly at the changing floor numbers.
The elevator arrived.
She pulled out her keys and walked up to her door.
Just as she inserted the key into the lock, a shadow shifted in her peripheral vision.
Seraphina paused.
She turned her head and saw Dominic standing in the shadowy corner of the hallway.
He was leaning against the wall, still wearing that same dark coat, looking utterly wretched.
Seraphina's brows knitted together.
Seeing her, Dominic stood up straight and walked over.
Gideon calmly took a step forward, shielding Seraphina behind him.
Dominic's footsteps halted.
He glanced at Gideon and pulled his lips into a faint, bitter smile.
"Gideon."
Gideon maintained a frosty expression and didn't reply.
Dominic shifted his gaze back to Seraphina.
"Gideon, don't be nervous. I just have a few questions I want to ask Seraphina."
Standing behind Gideon, Seraphina's voice was completely level. "We have nothing to talk about."
With that, she turned back to unlock the door and go inside.
