She knew this incident alone wouldn't put Cynthia away for long.
With her insisting it was just a harmless outing, the chain of evidence was admittedly weak. Factoring in her connections on the outside, she'd probably only be locked up for a few days before waltzing right back out.
But Seraphina didn't care.
One day, she would ensure that woman was locked behind bars for good.
She looked down into her daughter's eyes and gave a soft smile.
"We'll leave that up to the police officers."
"If they can prove she did something terrible, she won't be getting out anytime soon."
Lily nodded, half-understanding, her tiny brow furrowed as if she were trying hard to process the weight of those words.
Just as Seraphina reached to lead her away, the little girl suddenly yanked her hand free and pulled a small pencil sharpener out of her backpack.
With shocking speed.
She drove the small blade directly toward the back of her own hand.
Seraphina's pupils constricted in horror. She grabbed her tiny wrist in a death grip.
The blade stopped a millimeter from her skin, leaving only a faint white indent.
"Lily!"
Her voice cracked with sheer terror, her hands trembling violently.
"What are you doing?!"
Lily looked up with a solemn expression.
"If I get hurt, the bad lady will have to stay locked up longer."
Seraphina froze completely.
An overwhelming wave of sorrow flooded her chest, and hot tears instantly pricked her eyes.
She dropped to her knees and crushed her daughter against her chest.
"No."
"No matter what happens, you are never to hurt yourself."
"Do you hear me?"
Struggling to breathe in the suffocating embrace, Lily awkwardly patted her back.
"I hear you..."
Loosening her grip slightly, she looked down at her face.
"No one on this earth is worth sacrificing your own body for."
Lily nodded, but her mood immediately plummeted. She pursed her lips, her eyelashes fluttering down.
"I just didn't want her to hurt you anymore."
Seraphina gently stroked her hair, her palm warm and comforting.
"She can't hurt me."
"And you are never going to pull a stunt like this again."
"We don't hurt anyone, and that includes ourselves."
Nodding obediently, Lily shoved the sharpener back into her bag and reached out to grasp her mother's fingers.
Gideon smoothly took Seraphina's purse from her other hand.
"Let's go. Time to eat."
His tone was light, yet undeniably grounding.
Lily looked up at Seraphina.
"Mom, I'm starving."
She nodded softly.
"Okay."
The three of them headed out with Lily leading the way. Her steps were light and bouncy, her previous gloom almost entirely wiped away.
