The ambulance sped all the way and finally arrived at the hospital.
As soon as Seraphina was rushed into the emergency room, Gideon quickly followed but was stopped by a nurse at the door.
"Sir, please wait outside."
Gideon paused, his thin lips pressed into a tight line.
The sight of Seraphina lying unconscious in his arms earlier had taught him the true meaning of fear.
He couldn't bear to imagine what would have happened if he had arrived even a second later.
Time ticked by.
For a full day and night, Gideon barely closed his eyes.
It wasn't until the next day that the doctor finally brought good news.
"Mr. Cole, Ms. Sinclair is out of danger. The main issue was that she inhaled a severe amount of smoke, which irritated her respiratory tract. Fortunately, she was brought in on time. After treatment, her life is no longer at risk. We just need to clear her airways, provide proper care, and she'll need a period of rest to recover."
Hearing this, Gideon's taut nerves relaxed. "Thank you, doctor," he said hoarsely.
A few hours later, Seraphina finally woke up.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she saw Gideon sitting by the bed.
The man was still wearing the same clothes from yesterday, his eyes faintly bloodshot.
"You're awake?"
Seeing her open her eyes, Gideon immediately stood up. He reached out to check her forehead to make sure she didn't have a fever before asking softly, "How are you feeling? Does anything still hurt?"
Seraphina shook her head, her voice a little raspy.
"I'm fine, just a bit thirsty."
Gideon immediately poured a glass of warm water. He helped her sit up and carefully brought the rim to her lips.
Seraphina took a few sips, and her throat felt much better.
Looking at the man's haggard appearance, she felt a warmth in her chest.
"Have you been sitting here the whole time?"
"Yeah."
Gideon tucked the blanket around her. "The doctor said you're fine now, but they still need to observe you for a couple of days. You don't need to worry about anything right now. Just get some rest."
Seraphina curved her lips into a faint smile.
"I know. Mr. Cole is truly thoughtful."
Seeing that she was still in the mood to joke, Gideon finally revealed a hint of a smile.
