Hearing her strained voice, Gideon snapped back to reality and loosened his grip, though he refused to let her go entirely.
"Are you hurt? Is anything wrong?"
He looked down, his eyes frantically scanning her for injuries, his usual composed demeanor completely shattered.
Seraphina couldn't help but laugh.
"I'm perfectly fine. What's gotten into you? Why did you rush all the way out here?"
"I called you five times. You didn't answer."
Seraphina suddenly realized that she had been entirely consumed by her memories of Nora and hadn't heard her phone ring once.
She offered him an apologetic smile.
"I'm so sorry. I was cleaning up inside and didn't hear it."
Gideon's expression instantly darkened into utter seriousness.
"Seraphina, from now on, I want bodyguards following you wherever you go. Do you understand?"
Seraphina paused.
"Is it really that serious?"
"Yes."
Gideon didn't hesitate for a second.
"I know you hate being followed, and I never want to restrict your freedom, but the situation has changed. I cannot risk you getting hurt."
Thinking back to the recent string of near-disasters, Seraphina knew his paranoia was entirely justified.
Besides, she had her research to protect, and Nora was coming home soon. She absolutely could not afford to be careless right now.
"Okay. I agree."
A flicker of relief flashed in Gideon's eyes.
"You promise?"
"Of course I promise." Seraphina looked at him with fond exasperation. "I'm not a child, I know how to keep myself safe. I'll tell you where I'm going, and I'll take the security detail. Happy?"
Gideon finally let out a breath.
But a second later, his jaw tightened again.
"There's something else you need to know."
"What is it?"
"We found Cynthia Ross."
At the mention of the name, the warmth drained entirely from Seraphina's face.
"Where is she?"
"Someone smuggled her out of the country."
Seraphina's pupils contracted.
Gideon's voice was grim. "We haven't tracked down exactly who facilitated her escape, but one thing is certain—she has powerful backing."
