"Oh, I see her. She is gorgeous. Do you know her?"
"Not personally, but I remember her. She worked here a few years ago. I thought she was stunning back then, so she always stuck in my mind. I didn't expect her to still look this good after all these years. If anything, she carries herself with even more elegance now."
"She's definitely changed. I wouldn't have recognized her if you hadn't mentioned it. I never would've guessed she used to wait tables here."
"Tell me about it. She worked her fingers to the bone back then, doing the jobs of three people. In the dead of summer, she barely even had time to grab a sip of water..."
The two waitresses drifted down the hall, their voices fading into the distance.
Cynthia stood frozen, absorbing every single word.
Then, it clicked.
Years ago, when she was trying to keep tabs on Professor Vane, she had someone look into his schedule.
She learned that he hated doing business anywhere else. He preferred The Metropolis Culture Club and would drop by every few days.
She had visited a few times herself, hoping to engineer a chance encounter.
Unfortunately, security had always kept her at a distance, ensuring their paths never crossed.
Looking back, Seraphina must have crossed paths with the professor while she was waiting tables here.
A beautiful, attentive waitress with a knack for service—no wonder the guests remembered her.
At the end of the day, she was just the help.
A smirk touched Cynthia's lips. The vicious jealousy in her eyes evaporated, replaced by a sickening sense of superiority.
She knew exactly how demanding high-society figures could be of the service staff.
Seraphina, a girl from the middle of nowhere, might not have much, but she clearly knew how to serve people.
It made perfect sense. She had spent the last six years as a housewife for the Lockwood family. Wasn't that just another form of servitude?
Now that her marriage to Dominic was collapsing and her title as Mrs. Lockwood was slipping through her fingers, of course she had to fall back on her old tricks.
Seraphina deserved to lose Dominic. She deserved to be sent right back to waiting tables.
When they reached their booth, it was empty.
Lily was gone.
Cynthia scanned the area and finally spotted the small silhouette near the bookshelves.
The little girl was on her tiptoes in front of a tall shelf, her small hand reaching desperately for a comic book just out of her grasp.
She tried over and over, failing every time.
Her face was flushed red, tears pooling in her eyes.
Cynthia watched her for a moment. A faint, cold smile tugged at the corner of her mouth, but she made no move to help.
Instead, she turned to Dominic. "Let's grab something to eat. I'm starving."
