Ms. Lyons could not stomach another second of it.
She marched forward, her voice ringing with sheer authority. "Lily, how dare you speak to your mother like that? The teachers at school have repeatedly taught you to respect your parents. Did you forget every single lesson we gave you?"
Being publicly scolded by her teacher made Lily shrink back instinctively, but her bottom lip remained fiercely jutted out as she muttered defensively, "I'm not wrong, she's just lazy."
Looking at her daughter's stubborn face, the emotion washing over Seraphina was no longer agony. It was pure, unadulterated exhaustion.
Lily had screamed so much, constantly driving home the point that Lauren and Cynthia were "capable" women, people worthy of absolute admiration and respect.
Meanwhile, Seraphina Sinclair was only fit to be chained to a kitchen counter, orbiting the stove, serving the entire family their daily meals like a maid.
To Lily, she was never just a mother; she wanted a team of women catering to her every whim.
And in her daughter's twisted hierarchy, Seraphina was at the absolute bottom. She had no right to a personal life, no right to pursue a career, and no right to dream. Her sole purpose on this earth was to be a personal chef.
Seraphina let out a cold scoff and slammed the medical chart onto the bedside table. Right at that exact second, the hospital door was shoved open, and a deep, furious voice exploded from behind her.
"Seraphina, what the hell did you do to Lily this time?"
Seraphina slowly turned around.
Dominic was standing furiously in the doorway, his brow locked in a tight, angry scowl. His eyes swept over his daughter, who was sobbing hysterically with a bright red face, before snapping back to Seraphina. His gaze was loaded with pure accusation and judgment.
Cynthia trailed closely behind him, her face a mask of cool indifference as she casually scanned the room.
The exact moment Lily laid eyes on her father, her fading sniffles instantly morphed back into a deafening, theatrical wail.
She reached both of her little hands out toward Dominic, blubbering "Daddy, Daddy" through her tears, acting as though she had just survived a brutal torture session.
But Seraphina didn't give him the satisfaction of waiting for it. She ripped her gaze away and continued limping out the door.
A suffocating silence blanketed the hospital room.
Cynthia took two graceful steps forward, coming to stand right next to Dominic. Her eyes tracked the now-closed door, a microscopic smirk playing on her lips.
She placed a delicate hand on Dominic's forearm, her voice dripping with calculated sympathy. "Dominic, please don't let her get to you. She refuses to take care of her own child, yet she turns around and blames you for everything. You are killing yourself at work every single day to provide, and what does she do? Absolutely nothing, yet she walks around acting like the entire world owes her an apology."
"She has always been exactly like this. Completely blind to how good she actually has it."
Dominic's scowl remained firmly in place.
He carefully tucked the blanket around his daughter's trembling shoulders, his voice radiating pure ice. "If she had a single brain cell in her head, none of this drama would be happening."
