Lily burst into fresh tears. "You're my mom! Why are you holding someone else when they call you mom? I won't let you!"
Watching her tear-stained, flushed little face, Seraphina felt a painful twist in her chest.
She remembered not so long ago, this very daughter had asked, "Can't I have two moms?"
She remembered how Lily had compared her to her aunt and Cynthia right in front of her teacher.
She remembered Lily saying, "They're successful, and you're not, so you should just cook."
Back then, she wanted three mothers.
But now, hearing someone else call her "Godmother," she acted like the sky was falling.
Seraphina let out a soft breath, shoving the surging emotions back down.
She reached out to wipe Lily's face. "That is my best friend's son. I watched him grow up. He calls me his godmother, but a godmother isn't a mother. He knows his own mother is his real mom."
Lily wouldn't hear it. Her tiny hands balled into fists. "No! You're my mom! My mom only! Nobody else can call you that!"
Seraphina's fingers paused.
She looked into her daughter's bloodshot, tear-filled eyes, a heavy, indescribable bitterness rising in her throat.
She dropped her hand and stood up, her gaze fixed straight ahead, her voice growing even colder. "Not anymore. I told you before—the moment you chose someone else to be your mother, I stopped being yours."
"Your mother is with your father." Seraphina pointed toward the nanny. "Go back. You'll see your mom when you get back."
Lily stared at Janice. Her crying hitched for a second, her lips parting, but she didn't try to deny it again.
Seraphina's heart felt like it had been violently wrung out.
She didn't wait any longer. She turned around and headed toward the stairs.
"Don't go!"
Lily jolted at the sheer intensity of her voice, her small body trembling, but the stubborn defiance on her face didn't waver.
She screamed at Seraphina, "You're mean! I hate you! I don't want you anymore!"
Janice threw her arms around Lily's shoulders, crouching down to wipe her tears while coaxing her. She glanced back at Seraphina, her lips parting as if to say "Mrs. Lockwood," but she swallowed the words down.
Seraphina didn't even look at her. She turned and walked toward the stairs.
Her daughter's wails grew louder and louder behind her.
But she didn't look back, and she didn't stop for a single second.
Chelsea's car was waiting at the entrance.
When Seraphina pulled open the passenger door and got in, Chelsea was leaning back, buckling Toby into his car seat. She glanced over and immediately frowned.
"What's wrong? You look awful."
