Chapter 23 A Beast Hide Pouch

Chapter 23 A Beast Hide Pouch

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Physique +1.”

“… Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained a Level 2 mutant beast energy crystal core…”

As the energy crystal core was extracted, the mutant beast went limp with a wet thud.

The people who had been surrounding it exchanged looks.

Huh? It dies after just one hit? Is this mutant beast seriously that weak?

Having slipped away to hide her contribution, Reina quietly moved toward another mutant beast.

This one stood about 10 feet tall and looked incredibly bizarre. It was kind of like a kangaroo, but black mist swirled around its body. Its fangs were long and sharp, and its front claws were razor-edged, like a demon from hell.

It was unbelievably fast. It caught up to one person, sprang up, and kicked them flying in an instant, then slashed another person’s back with a single swipe.

If that person had not been wearing a high-grade protective suit, his spine probably would have been torn apart.

Even so, his back was drenched in blood, hinting that he was badly hurt.

Screams rang out nonstop, and Reina quickly backed off.

Just then, an ability user activated their power. A black-green net of vines appeared out of thin air and dropped over the mutant kangaroo, binding it tight in the vine net.

The mutant kangaroo thrashed wildly and was about to break free.

“Kill it, now!” the ability user shouted, face flushed red with strain. “I can only hold it for ten seconds!”

The moment Reina heard that, her eyes lit up. She darted over and smacked the mutant kangaroo on the butt.

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Agility +2.”

Ding! “Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained Strength +2.”

“Energy -1. Harvest successful. EXP +50. Gained a Level 3 mutant beast hide pouch. It can hold 35 cubic feet of items and is not limited by weight rules.”

A palm-sized, fuzzy black beast-hide pouch instantly appeared in Reina’s hand.

She did not have time to examine it. The mutant kangaroo let out a shrill, miserable scream and tore free of the vine net in a split second.

It whipped around, and its furious, blood-red eyes locked onto Reina.

Reina knew things had turned bad and immediately pulled back. At the same time, she grabbed her flamethrower and fired straight at the beast’s face.

With a loud whoosh, the mutant kangaroo’s entire body ignited.

Several ability users rushed in again, and they killed it off quickly.

Reina finally let out a breath, quietly touched the small beast hide pouch in her chest pocket, and shoved it deeper inside.

Was this beast hide pouch really what she thought it was? Once things calmed down, she would find something to test it with.

Right then, a thunderous crashing sound came from outside the camp gate, like some giant beast was trying to force its way in.

“Move, move! All ability users, get on the wall and support them. Everyone else clear the passage!”

Countless mutant beasts had clogged up the camp entrance, and it was stopping the gate from closing.

The camp actually had two gates. The first was a drop gate that came down from above, and the second was a pair of cast-iron doors that closed by being pushed shut from inside.

They had not closed them earlier because there were still many survivors and vehicles outside that had not made it in yet.

When everyone finally got in safely, those massive mutant beasts surged in with them. Their bodies jammed the first gate, so it could not drop no matter what.

Reina was not about to go up on the wall. She was still 50 EXP away from leveling up, and she was looking for chances to go after mutant beasts.

But the entrance was way too chaotic. Dozens of people were beating down a single mutant beast, and she could not squeeze in at

all.

Plus, she didn’t want to get caught in the crossfire of the others’ abilities.

With no choice, she ran off to find the dead Level 3 mutant kangaroo again, because she still had not gotten its crystal core.

On the way, she came across two mutant beast corpses. Reina looked around and saw no one nearby, so she quickly crouched down and looted them.

Ding! “Energy-1. Harvest successful. EXP +20. Gained a piece of Level 2 mutant beast meat. Contamination Value: 12. Increases Satiety when consumed.”

In an instant, a huge slab of bright red beast meat appeared under her hand, easily 40 to 60 pounds.

Reina jumped, then quickly looked around. When she saw no one was paying attention, she pulled out the beast-hide pouch.

But how was she supposed to use this thing?

Reina aimed the mouth of the pouch at the huge chunk of meat and jabbed it down, but nothing happened.

She was scratching her head when a prompt suddenly sounded in her mind. “Do you want to consume Energy to store one piece of Level 2 mutant beast meat?”

“Yes! Yes! Store it, hurry!”

Reina blurted it out without thinking.

In the blink of an eye, the big pile of meat on the ground disappeared.

At the same time, her Energy dropped by two points.
