Chapter 27 Open Up
Then another thought hit her. If the meat spoiled, started to stink, or got cooked, would it still work?
Maybe I should cook some and test it.
Whether it works or not, cooked meat would last longer than raw meat anyway.
Reina was the type who acted the moment she decided.

Reina took the newly bought small gas canister out of the wicker basket, then took out a large pot, wiped it down a bit, rinsed it with water, and started cutting meat and tossing it in.
Of course, there was no way she could boil 88 pounds of meat in one pot. She had to split it into portions.
To speed things up and save time, she divided the Level 3 mutant kangaroo meat into three portions, diced all of it into small cubes, then added water and salt and boiled it plain.
While waiting for the meat to cook, she walked to the narrow window, turned off the solar light, pulled back the thick curtains, and looked outside through the dense wire-mesh screen.
Outside was pitch-black. Every so often, she heard beasts screeching and roaring.
It sounded like they were ripping into each other, or fighting over food.
Thankfully, they were not slamming into the camp walls.
But now and then, firebursts flared along the wall, followed by scattered gunshots. That had to be the mercenaries. They were guarding the camp and keeping mutant beasts from climbing up.
Some mutant beasts were good at climbing. If the guards let their attention slip, those things could scramble up the wall in an instant.
When she heard a few high, piercing roars, panic rose in Reina’s chest.
Those were the giant beasts. They had not left. Luckily, they were not attacking the camp either.
Still, that wasn’t good news.
There were plenty of mutant beast corpses piled up outside the camp. Those giants were definitely feeding.
A certain possibility flashed through Reina’s mind, and a chill crawled up her spine.
If they finished eating all the corpses outside and still did not leave, then the whole camp would become their backup food storage.
She had heard people say that high-grade mutant beasts liked claiming territory. Once they claimed a place, they would guard it and refuse to let go until they ate every bit of food within that territory.
Reina’s mood grew heavy. She drew the blackout curtain shut and turned the solar light back on.
She crouched beside the gas canister, staring blankly at the thin white steam curling off the pot.
If it came to that, she would run the first chance she got.

After eating half a bowl of meat cubes, Reina checked her panel.
Her Strength really had increased by one point. It was 21 now.
And her Energy had slowly climbed back up to 12 during that time. If she slept, it would probably refill all the way.
Once the last pot finished cooking, she would go to sleep right away.

So Reina sat beside the gas stove, fighting off sleep as she watched the pot. She drifted in and out, and finally made it until the meat was done.
She shut off the gas canister, pulled open the thick curtains to air out the room, then threw herself onto the bed and fell asleep instantly.
