Chapter 53 Schemes in the Shadows
At the end of his post, Francis added a crowdfunding request, calling on everyone to donate points to buy an awakening potion for Reina’s younger sister, so they could “slap that ungrateful brat in the face someday.”
Amber read the long post, and an inexplicable sense of uncase crept into her chest. She quickly/sent Francis a private message, “Francis, Reina is already Level 3 now. I saw it with my own eyes. You’d better stop provoking her.”
“What? She’s Level 3? No way.
“She? With that useless Harvesting Ability, how can she jump straight to Level 3?” Francis refused to belleve it.
“Believe it or not, I’ve said my piece. You’d better be careful.”
After sending that, Amber closed the chat and glanced toward Reina’s bed.
But the thick curtain blocked her view completely.
After a moment’s thought, she sent another message to Easton, “Captain, Reina is Level 3 now. Not sure how
she did it.”
A moment later, Easton replied, “Level 3? Impossible. Not long ago, she was still a useless Level 1.”
“I saw it myself. She waved her hand and sent her mom flying a few feet away.”
“She really hit her mom?” Easton was stunned. “So what Francis said was true? That’s seriously messed up.”
“Don’t just listen to him. That woman hurt Reina’s leg first and tried to grab her smartwatch. That’s why she got thrown out.”
To be honest, Amber felt a bit of sympathy for Reina. But sympathy was one thing, and friendship was another. They were never going to be friends.
The gap between their backgrounds was simply too big.
Amber’s parents both worked in official departments at the base, and they lived comfortably. Reina, on the other hand, had no father and came from a poor household. Her mother didn’t work and often frequented nightlife venues.
Not to make money, but for fun. Even in her forties, she dressed like a young woman, so she was clearly addicted to that flashy, indulgent lifestyle.
“I see.”
Easton wasn’t too concerned about the family drama. His focus was elsewhere. “Do you think Reina consumed some kind of rare treasure to suddenly reach Level 3?”
“Maybe. I’m curious too,” Amber replied. If not for her pride, she might’ve gone to ask Reina herself.
After a moment of thought, Easton sent another message, “How about I go visit her at the hospital? We’re classmates after all, so it’d be proper to show some concern.”

Amber let out a small laugh. “I’d advise against it. She’s pretty arrogant now and would not show anyone respect. Don’t go there just to embarrass yourself.”
Easton sent a helpless emoji, rubbing his chin as he thought.
To be honest, Reina’s ability had always been useful, but the only drawback was that it could only harvest low-level mutant plants, and the number of uses was limited.
But now that she’d leveled up, her mental energy should have increased significantly, and her ability likely strengthened as well.
He still remembered the incident with the Level 3 mutant beast meat at the camp. That “purified meat was probably produced by Reina’s ability.
If that was true, her value was now on par with Francis’s.
At that thought, a sharp gleam flashed in Easton’s eyes.
He was currently a squad leader in the Falcon Mercenary Corps with only about a dozen members, who were mostly classmates with mediocre abilities.
The only truly useful one, Francis, had already been taken by headquarters. All the purified Level 2 and Level 3 mutant beast meat he produced now had to be handed over, distributed at the captain’s discretion.
And Easton’s squad, being newly formed, didn’t even get scraps.
Just thinking about it made him furious.
Francis had been his squad member, and yet he’d been reassigned just like that, turned into a logistics asset for the higher-ups.
One of the main ways ability users advanced was by regularly consuming high-grade pure meat.
Or by taking outrageously expensive high-level potions, which were also extracted from high-grade pure meat or rare mutant plants.
Now that he’d lost Francis as a free source of purified meat, how long would it take for him to level up?
If Reina could truly purify high-level mutant beast meat, then he’d have to visit the hospital. He needed to build a relationship with her.
Ideally, he could even convince her to join his squad. Once he reached Level 3, he might have a chance to compete for a platoon leader position.
The more Easton thought about it, the more feasible it seemed.
A true man can adapt to circumstances. So what if he had to humble himself once? When he rose to power in the future, he could repay this humiliation tenfold.
Meanwhile, back at home.
The moment Helen returned from the hospital, she smashed a teacup to the ground.
