Chapter 60 Scarcity and Harvest
This wasn’t a good sign.

Reina thought for a moment and then sent a message to Chloe, “Chloe, what are you up to right now?”
Chloe replied instantly, “I’m outside the city with my brother and sister-in-law to see if we can find any mutant plant seeds.”
It was August-autumn in the Stellar Calendar-and the peak season for mutated plants to mature.
Every year around this time, large numbers of harvesting teams would head out of the city to search for seeds and fruits. Anything with a contamination value under 200 would be collected and sold cheaply to the Ability Users Association.
Those organizations would purify the produce and resell it at a high price.
But this year was different. After the devastation of the insect swarm, the chances of finding valuable mutated plants were extremely low.
So Chloe and the others likely wouldn’t gain much.
“Are there still mutant beasts outside the city?” Reina asked.
Chloe replied, “We’re just staying nearby, so we rarely run into mutant beasts, but there are plenty of bugs.”
Reina replied, “I’m planning to dig up sweet potatoes. Want to come?”
She couldn’t let that patch of sweet potatoes she found last time go to waste. If a mutant wild boar got to it first, she’d regret it to death.
“I’m coming, I’m coming!”
Chloe jumped up in excitement and hugged Sasha tightly. “Sasha! Reina’s taking us to dig sweet potatoes!”
She knew Reina’s ability well, so digging sweet potatoes with her was basically the same as picking them up off the ground. They were definitely going to bring back a huge haul.
After messaging Chloe, Reina contacted Ursula as well. “I’m planning to rent a truck in a few days to dig up sweet potatoes. Want to join?”
Ursula replied immediately, “Of course! Reina, is your leg fully healed yet?”
“Mostly. I can walk now, but long distances are still a bit tough.”
“That’s good enough! When are you going? I’ll bring my husband along too.”
“In three days. I’ll notify you and Chloe then.”
“Deal!”
After setting the time, Reina closed her smartwatch and picked up the bamboo poles to build trellises for her tomatoes and beans.

By the time she finished, the supplies she had ordered-grain, daily necessities, and several large wooden barrels-had all arrived.
She took everything out of her beast hide pouch, stored the new barrels inside, and headed downstairs to collect more soil.
After walking about two miles, she reached a riverside forest. Among the dense growth of mutated plants, she searched for suitable soil,
The deeper she went, the richer the soil became. Since they were layered with decaying leaves, they were perfect for growing vegetables.
The only problem was the contamination level. When she checked with her smartwatch it read over 800.
Even the trees themselves had contamination values exceeding a thousand.
No wonder this place hadn’t been developed. No one came here. Even the ripe fruits hanging from the trees were left untouched.
Contamination levels like this were enough to scare off any harvester,
Reina wandered through the forest, climbing trees whenever she spotted ripe fruit.
Wearing her protective suit and with her Level 3 Physique, she wasn’t afraid of the extreme contamination.
In less than two hours, she had filled three large barrels with mutated persimmons.
Each fruit was enormous, and they were about the size of a basketball. They were bright orange-red and attractive from a distance.
But up close, a faint layer of black mist seemed to cling to their surface, giving off an ominous aura.
When she checked, their contamination values were over 900.
At that level, even standing too close could infect an ordinary person.
Even Level 3 purification ability users in the base couldn’t cleanse such heavily contaminated fruit into something edible.
But Reina had no such concerns. With repeated use of her ability, she could transform corrupted fruit into something clean.
And these were Level 4 mutated fruits. If she refined them enough times, there was even a chance of unlocking special attributes.
On top of that, high-level fruits didn’t spoil easily. As long as they weren’t damaged, they could last for months.
Seeing the time, Reina packed up her barrels and headed back.
On the way, she passed a vast rice field enclosed by fine metal fencing and low walls. Her eyes filled with
envy.
