Wasteland Queen: My Harvest Power novel Chapter 62

Chapter 62 The Search and the Secret

“Search? For what?” Reina immediately bristled, blocking the doorway.

One of them replied coldly, “We’re under orders to recover a lost item and a mutant magpie. Someone reported you’re raising one.”

At that, Reina’s heart skipped, but her expression stayed firm. “So what if I keep a magpie? Is that illegal? And what does your missing item have to do with me?”

Another man, already irritated, snapped loudly, “The item was taken by a mutant magpie! And in the entire Phoenix Residential Complex, you’re the only one raising one! What do you think that means?”

Reina pressed her lips together.

That precise, huh? So the little magpie really snatches the crystal core right in front of them?

But if that were the case, they wouldn’t have waited days to show up.

Fine. Deny everything.

“Alright. Go ahead and search. But if you don’t find anything, how are you compensating me?” Reina stepped aside, letting them in.

Because she had already spotted Victor coming up the stairs.

The four men from the Falcon Corps didn’t hesitate. They rushed inside and began tearing through the place, searching for the magpie.

Two of them froze when they saw the three faintly glowing machetes on the table.

One even picked one up to inspect it.

“Put that down!” A sharp voice rang out from the doorway. Victor strode in with three team members behind him.

Startled, the man quickly set the blade down.

“Captain Langley, what brings you here?” the squad leader asked, forcing a smile.

Victor frowned. “Who gave you permission to barge into a civilian home? Since when does the Falcon Corps ignore base law like this?”

“Captain Langley, we’re acting under our captain’s orders. A mutant magpie stole a Level 5 mutant crystal core. We tracked it here through surveillance,”

The squad leader glanced at Reina, looking aggrieved.

Victor frowned. When he was about to respond, Reina spoke first, gently stroking the startled magpie in her arms. “Captain Langley, let them search. Otherwise they won’t let this go.”

She paused, then added calmly, “My magpie has been inside the whole time. It hasn’t gone anywhere, and it definitely didn’t steal any crystal core. If we don’t settle this today, they’ll just keep coming back.”

Chapter 62 The Search and the Secret

Finished

Victor looked at the bird in her arms. Something about it felt off. Its sharp eyes darted around in a calculating manner, yet it pretended to be frightened.

“Fine. Search,” Victor said coldly, sweeping his gaze over the men. “But if you find nothing, I’ll personally have a word with your captain.”

The threat in his tone was unmistakable.

The Falcon mercenaries didn’t dare argue. They immediately split up, combing through every inch of the apartment. They found nothing.

One of them even glanced at Reina, clearly wanting to search her.

Reina sneered inwardly and spun around on the spot, arms slightly out.

It was hot, so she wore only a short-sleeved shirt and cropped pants. Her frame was slim, and she had nowhere to hide anything.

As for the small fur pouch at her waist, it was flat and barely palm-sized. No way it could hold something as big as a fist-sized crystal core.

Running out of options, they moved toward the dozen planting barrels. “Are you blind?” Victor snapped. “Those seedlings are packed tight. Where exactly do you think something could be hidden?”

Reina had already lifted each barrel to show them that there were no gaps or hidden compartments.

After another thorough search, they still found nothing. Defeated, the Falcon squad slunk out, faces dark, and left the building.

Reina shut the door, finally relaxing.

With a smile, she brought out some persimmons. “Captain Langley, thanks for coming. Otherwise, I’d never have cleared my name.”

Victor sat down, peeling a persimmon. “You know better than anyone whether you’re innocent or not…”

Reina chuckled dryly.

A team member nicknamed Stick Marquée chuckled. “Our captain always protects his own. Even if you had taken it, they wouldn’t get anything out of you.”

Another added, “Reina, why not join our unit? Next time the Falcons try something, just hit back.”

“Exactly! If you were part of Thunder Mercenary Corps, our captain would still cover for you even if you killed a few of them on the spot today.”

“Really?” That struck a chord deep inside Reina.
