Seren had barely hung up when her phone lit up with Nadine's name.
The moment she answered, Nadine's voice came through, thick with barely disguised glee.
"Seren, you have to hear this—it's hilarious. My mom's heart was acting up today, so we called in the family doctor. While he was here, he started chatting and told me the Bradley family's house is a war zone right now. Swain almost gave Zena a heart attack because of you, and Zena's so furious she kicked Swain out of his position at Rutledge Group. She put Slater in his place."
The Bradleys and Brewers had always been close; both families even shared the same team of private doctors.
Nadine, being a doctor herself and someone who loved a good gossip, was naturally on friendly terms with the family physician. In their line of work, private doctors always heard more than they let on—intimate secrets and all.
Since Nadine was almost family, the doctor never bothered to keep anything from her. He knew if he didn't tell her, Zena probably would.
"Swain actually texted me just now, asking if I knew where you were. I told him I had no idea. Now he wants to know? Where was all this devotion before? Late-blooming affection is worth less than weeds."
Nadine figured Swain was the only halfway decent one in that family, but even he didn't have much of a conscience. Honestly, if he'd really cared, he wouldn't have treated Seren like that in the past.
Seren didn't say much, but deep down she felt a sudden, unexpected sense of relief. Nadine really understood her.
Suddenly, Nadine made a dramatic noise on the other end, as if she'd just slapped her own forehead.
"Oh shoot, I got so caught up in the gossip I almost forgot the real reason I called. I'm off work tomorrow—how about you and Lennon take me out to dinner?"
She grumbled, "I was planning to sneak home for a free meal, but my mom's been driving me crazy lately. She barely ever nags me about dating, but suddenly she's on my case every day. I think seeing you and Lennon so lovey-dovey triggered something in her. My poor heart has taken a hundred hits from you two. Whether you invite me or not, I'm coming over for dinner tomorrow—I'll show up with my own bowl if I have to."
Seren couldn't help but laugh.
She glanced at Lennon, wordlessly asking for his opinion.
He was sitting close enough that he'd overheard the whole conversation. Lennon ruffled her hair gently, his voice low and warm.
