Watching You Burn In Regret novel Chapter 204

Nadine sneered.

She finally understood why Seren was so determined to cut ties with this family.

To them, money could solve everything. It was their universal solution. Having a family like this was truly disgusting.

Nadine shot Slater a dismissive look. "That's enough. I'm done talking to you, and you should stop trying to talk to Seren. You're not worthy. She's already severed ties with you. You're nothing to her now, so what right do you have to approach her?"

"And I'm warning you," she added, "if you keep harassing us, I'll call the police and report you for public disturbance."

Slater froze. He knew Nadine wasn't bluffing; she always followed through on her threats. If the police got involved, it would be even more humiliating for him.

Nadine turned and walked away with Seren. Throughout the entire confrontation, Seren hadn't said a single word to Slater or even spared him a second glance. Now that the connection was broken, she couldn't be bothered to waste her breath.

Once they were gone, Carla, who had been hiding in the background to avoid the crossfire, cautiously approached Slater. Her head was bowed, her eyes misty. "Slater, this is all my fault," she whispered. "If I hadn't called Mom that day, maybe Seren wouldn't have cut ties with us, and you and Nadine wouldn't have fought like that."

Slater's expression softened at the sight of her. "Carla, don't blame yourself. You're innocent. None of this has anything to do with you." He didn't find it strange that she had hidden away. Carla was timid, and the argument between him and Nadine would have terrified her.

Carla sniffled. "But Swain thinks it's my fault. He's taking it out on me now and isn't treating me the same way." She knew perfectly well that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. If she didn't voice the injustices she suffered at Swain's hands, who would know? Who would pity her?
