Watching You Burn In Regret novel Chapter 206

Nadine was naturally chatty, and as the town doctor, she knew everything about everyone. No secret in Seaside City was safe from her.

Zena and Thurman Bradley were fundamentally traditional, favoring their sons.

While they doted on Carla, they would never let her take over Rutledge Group.

The reason she wasn't allowed to work there was to prevent any ideas about claiming a larger stake in the company, since she was a daughter who would eventually marry out.

The small 5% of shares allotted to her were designated as her dowry, meant to increase her value on the marriage market. In a way, she wasn't just a daughter; she was an asset to be appraised.

That's why Nadine had initially dismissed the rumor of Carla working at Rutledge Group and hadn't mentioned it to Seren.

Seren raised an eyebrow, her tone detached. "Carla is clever for seizing an opportunity like this."

Nadine snorted. "Calling her clever is an insult to the word. She's cunning and deceitful." She then recalled seeing Carla with Edwin Montgomery at Duskwood Temple, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. "Carla never does anything without a motive. Do you think she's aiming for Rutledge Group this time?"

Seren just smiled nonchalantly. "What if she is? What if she isn't? It has nothing to do with us. It's better not to get involved." In the past, she couldn't understand why Zena and Thurman, her own parents, had been so indifferent to her struggles. Now she understood: what seems urgent to you is trivial to those who don't care. It was a cruel but realistic truth. And now, the Bradleys were just as insignificant to her.

"You're right. I have enough of my own problems to deal with," Nadine agreed, already feeling a headache coming on at the thought of work. She muttered to the half-eaten kebab in her hand, "Oh, little lamb, you were so cute. How could they turn you into something so fragrant and delicious? This is a tragedy. It's the vendor's fault, really. I didn't mean to eat you. Please, in your heavenly pasture, bless my night shift. No emergencies, no code blues."

Seren, who had just taken a sip of water, had to struggle to swallow it without choking. "You've already prayed at Duskwood Temple, and now you're praying to a kebab skewer? For all you know, that might not even be lamb."
