Swain had been following the news about the Rutledge Group. Despite his anger toward Zena, she was still his mother, and the company's success was tied to his own future. He had seen the news about Carla and immediately understood what had happened. He had always been wary of her manipulative nature, but this was a new level of betrayal.
"Carla," he began, his voice tight with fury, "have we ever done anything to wrong you? How could you conspire with an outsider to hurt our family?"
"Swain, it's not like that…" she started to protest.
"Not like that?" he cut her off. "Don't you dare lie to me. After all these years, I can't believe I ever defended you. I know I failed Seren, but I never failed you. I postponed work to be at your competitions. I took your side in every argument with Seren. And this is how you repay us? With betrayal?"
Carla bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears as if she were the one who had been wronged.
"Don't you give me that look," Swain snapped. "Did I say a single thing that wasn't true?"
She quickly schooled her expression into one of submissiveness. She knew better than to argue. Any explanation would only fuel his anger.
Her silence, however, only infuriated him more. He noticed her clenched fists, her nails digging into her palms. It was a clear sign of defiance.
"You have no remorse," he said, his voice filled with disgust. "You're a lost cause. All the love we gave you was wasted. I should have been there for Seren instead of you. At least she would never have betrayed her own family."
