What a line that was.
Family was there to be deceived.
Cecilia didn't indulge her. "Wasn't your father-in-law the one who started this by plotting against our family? Do you think everyone is an idiot? You think nobody could see through his little tricks?"
"He was the first one to lie!"
Miranda choked on her words.
"My dad was doing it for the whole family. He wanted to expand the ancestral graves. Then news came out later about the demolition, and that was when he figured he could make a little more money too."
"Oh? So that's supposed to make him innocent?"
Cecilia let out a yawn.
"But from what I heard, the first thing Uncle Robert did after he got the land was start building houses. He never planned to expand the ancestral graves at all."
"And one more thing. We never set him up. If you go ask Mr. Chandler, the owner of the land, he'll tell you himself. My husband paid a huge price to buy that land, and he bought it to expand the ancestral graves, not to cash in on demolition money."
Cecilia said every word clearly.
She took her time and laid the whole thing out from start to finish.
After hearing all that, Miranda couldn't come up with a single piece of proof to push back.
"Even so, my father-in-law can't be the only one taking the loss here, can he?"
"How is he the only one taking a loss? My husband got the short end of it too. If he'd gotten the land the way it was supposed to be, all he would've needed to do was expand it. Now he still has to clean up the mess Uncle Robert left behind. And tearing down all those houses he built is going to cost a lot of money too."
Cecilia paused.
Then she looked at Miranda and spoke again.
"Miranda, could you talk to Uncle Robert for us and have him cover the demolition costs for those houses? After all, nobody's money comes blowing in on the wind."
Miranda hadn't expected Cecilia to be this sharp-tongued now.
Her hand closed into a fist.
"So that's it? You have no intention of helping?"
"Sorry. It's not easy for us to make money either," Cecilia said, still speaking in that mild tone.
