**Silent Roads Remember by Sawyer**
**Chapter 110**
The atmosphere in the car shifted as Paul fell into a contemplative silence, casting furtive glances at the rearview mirror. A wave of relief washed over him when he noticed that Titus didn’t appear angry; a chuckle escaped Paul’s lips, albeit a bit awkwardly, as he tried to lighten the mood.
“Mrs. Goodman has this incredible ability to connect with everyone she meets. People genuinely adore her,” Paul remarked, his voice carrying a hint of admiration. “And you know, Queenie is fiercely protective of Mrs. Goodman. That says a lot about the kind of person she is—clearly, Mrs. Goodman has a heart of gold.”
Titus, momentarily distracted, turned his attention from the road to Chiara, who was nestled comfortably in his arms, lost in a deep slumber. His fingers brushed gently over her eyelids and brows, a tender gesture that spoke volumes of his growing affection.
“Yeah, she really is easy to like,” Titus replied, his voice softening.
Paul’s eyes widened in surprise as he caught a glimpse of that moment in the rearview mirror. ‘Wow, would you look at that,’ he thought, a mixture of disbelief and understanding flooding his mind.
When had he ever witnessed Mr. Goodman display such warmth? It seemed as though the icy exterior Titus had carefully crafted was beginning to thaw. Paul had sensed this change ever since they uncovered Chiara’s secret back at the Lynch residence. Deep down, he had an inkling that Titus would eventually come around.
And now, it appeared that day was finally dawning.
‘It seems Mrs. Goodman is finally getting a break. Things are really turning in her favor,’ Paul mused, a smile creeping onto his face.
‘If that’s the case, my life is about to get a whole lot easier. No more tiptoeing around two women just to maintain the peace!’
Meanwhile, Lindsay had already succumbed to the embrace of sleep, but the commotion stirred her awake. She stumbled out of her room, still half-asleep, and blinked at the sight of Titus cradling Chiara. A flicker of surprise crossed her face.
“Mr. Goodman, why are you two back so late? Is Mrs. Goodman alright? Did she have too much to drink?” Lindsay inquired, concern lacing her voice.
Titus simply replied, “She’s asleep.”
“Should I whip up something for her hangover?” Lindsay offered, her maternal instincts kicking in.
“No need,” Titus answered, his tone clipped yet calm.
As Lindsay watched them ascend the stairs, she stifled a yawn and thought, ‘Seems like Mrs. Goodman is just asleep. She’s not drunk at all.’
Back in her cozy bed, Chiara instinctively rolled over, slipping back into a peaceful slumber.
Titus lingered by Chiara’s side, observing her serene expression for a moment longer. He gently pulled the covers around her, ensuring she was warm and comfortable before quietly exiting the room.
In the kitchen, Titus leaned against the window, absently twirling his phone between his fingers. The night was still, but a storm brewed within him. After a few moments of contemplation, he finally dialed Elaine’s number.
Elaine had been unable to shake the feeling of unease that had settled over her ever since Lena’s phone call. The night had been restless, filled with tossing and turning, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn’t quiet.
So when she saw Titus’s name flash on her phone, excitement was the last thing she felt. Instead, a wave of anxiety washed over her.
Elaine stared at her phone for what felt like an eternity before finally answering, feigning a sleepy tone.
“Titus? Why are you calling me so late? Is something wrong?” she asked, her voice thick with the pretense of sleep.
Titus couldn’t help but snicker at her act, a hint of amusement lacing his voice. “Elaine…”
A jolt of unease shot through Elaine, her heart racing as she nervously swallowed and clutched her blanket tighter.
“Huh? W-what’s wrong?” she stammered, her mind racing.
“Did you sleep well tonight?” Titus asked, his tone deceptively casual.
Elaine was thrown off by the question, unsure of how to respond. “Yeah, I slept fine. Why? Did something happen?” she replied, desperately trying to maintain her facade.
‘No way I’m telling him I haven’t slept at all. That would give everything away,’ Elaine thought, biting her lip anxiously.
“Oh? Funny, my wife didn’t sleep too well tonight,” Titus remarked, a weighty undertone in his voice that sent chills down Elaine’s spine.
Elaine found herself at a loss for words, but in that moment, she didn’t care about anything else. “Anything, Titus. A friend, a sister, whatever you want, I’ll accept it. Please don’t send me away. I swear I’ll never do it again. I won’t get in the way of you and Ms. Lynch, I promise. Just don’t make me leave. I can’t live without you…” she begged, her heart racing.
“Elaine, you should be addressing Chiara as Mrs. Goodman, not Ms. Lynch,” Titus said, his voice laced with cold finality.
Elaine felt her throat tighten, her face draining of color as a tempest of hatred and bitter resentment swirled within her. She gripped the phone tightly, her knuckles turning white.
“I’m not leaving!” she declared, forcing each word through clenched teeth.
“Alright, it’s your call. Refuse to go, and Eldravia will be off-limits to you forever. You won’t get another chance to set foot there,” Titus warned, his tone unwavering.
Elaine’s eyes widened in disbelief. She had just received an invitation from the Royal Dance Troupe and was set to perform next week, yet Titus was using her dreams as leverage against her.
“Why are you doing this to me?” she choked out, her voice breaking.
“Tell me, have I ever treated you unfairly? After everything you’ve done to my wife, if I truly wanted to make you pay, do you honestly think you could bear the consequences?” Titus said, his voice a chilling reminder of the reality she faced.
Elaine was left speechless, her mind racing. ‘No way… I can’t believe Titus would actually do this to me,’ she thought, panic rising. This time, he was serious. He was done letting her off easy!
Her composure shattered, Elaine snapped, her voice cracking with emotion. “Why? Is this all because of Chiara? Are you really kicking me out and cutting me off just for her?”
Lena’s words echoed in her mind, haunting her like a twisted curse.
“You’ve fallen for her, haven’t you? You’re in love with Chiara, aren’t you?” Elaine blurted out, her eyes ablaze with fury.
All the bitterness and jealousy she had suppressed surged forth, threatening to spill over.
“Don’t forget the words you said to me back then, and don’t forget what you promised my sister! You said you would always take care of me and never leave me, and yet now, for another woman, you’re willing to break that promise. You’ve fallen for someone else… You’ve fallen for Chiara. Titus, how could you do this to my sister?” Elaine screamed, her voice echoing in the stillness of the night.
