Chapter 123

Heather laid all her cards on the table, making her intentions clear and showing just how sincere she was.

“Mr. Bradford, I really hope you’ll give my offer some serious thought. I’m sincerely inviting you to join Lynch Group, and if there’s anything you want, just say the word,” she said.

Kason took his time finishing his braised stew, then wiped his fingers with a wet wipe.

“Ms. Lynch, do you have any idea how many companies have tried to recruit me since I got back?” he asked.

Heather honestly had no clue, but she remembered that guy who threw a tantrum at the hotel. She could picture him perfectly.

Even she had reached out to him, so there must be a whole bunch of others too.

Seeing her stay silent, Kason set down the wet wipe, leaned in a little, and smirked at her, his eyes fixed on her face.

“Let me be blunt. Lynch Group isn’t even on my radar,” he said.

That was about as direct as it got. He clearly didn’t see Lynch Group as worth his time.

Heather fell silent, but just then, the news started covering a local story.

The report was about a bankrupt business owner who had committed suicide by jumping off a building at noon today.

When Heather saw the photo on the screen, her face shifted ever so slightly.

Kason caught her change in expression and just glanced at the screen, unfazed.

Heather couldn’t really describe how she felt. Someone she’d just met yesterday was now dead.

“I saw that guy at the hotel yesterday. He was looking for you, but the hotel security threw him out,” Heather said.

Kason raised an eyebrow at her. “So what?”

Heather watched him in silence, letting their earlier conversation drop. Instead, she asked something totally unrelated to herself.

“If that guy had actually met you yesterday, would you have helped him?” she asked.

“No,” Kason replied without a second thought.

Heather looked as if she’d expected that all along. “If you’d helped him, would he still have ended up dead?”

Kason leaned back in his chair, totally unfazed. “Probably not.”

Heather just frowned slightly and let it go.

Kason stared at her for a long moment, then let out a low laugh. “What, you think I’m ruthless?”

Heather shook her head. “You’ve got your own priorities, Mr. Bradford.”

If a guy like him didn’t even care about Lynch Group, there’s no way he’d give a damn about some small-time steel company.

“If I’d helped him yesterday, Ms. Lynch, you probably wouldn’t even have had the chance to treat me to this meal,” Kason said.

Heather just shot back, cool as ever, “Isn’t this meal worth a hundred grand?”

With that, she got up and walked over to the front desk to pay. Kason watched her go, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

After paying, Heather came back and looked him straight in the eye. “Mr. Bradford, I’m not giving up. Like I said, to prove I mean business, I’ll seriously consider any request you have. If it’s something I can do, I’ll do my best to make it happen for you.”

Kason glanced up at her, sprawled out comfortably in his chair, a lingering hickey still visible on his throat.

But Heather kept her gaze fixed on his eyes, out of basic respect for him as a person.

“Anything?” Kason asked, his tone teasing.

Heather gave him a pointed look and clarified, “Professionally, I’ll do my best.”

Kason scoffed, got up, and walked right over to her, hands shoved in his pockets. He leaned in close, his voice low and provocative.

“Like I said, I like it when people play to my preferences. Ms. Lynch, if you’re really that sincere, why not give yourself to me? Maybe then I’ll actually think about what you want,” he said.

Heather’s brows knitted together as she stepped back, her refusal plain as day.

Kason clearly expected this. Even if Lynch Group was going downhill, Heather was still a rich girl born with a silver spoon.

“Guess that’s the end of it. Thanks for dinner, Ms. Lynch,” he said.

Heather could only stand there and watch as Kason walked away.

Heather pressed her fingers to her forehead, thinking, ‘Kason’s always been difficult, but I didn’t expect him to be this unbelievably stubborn.’

Feeling defeated, she could only head back to the hotel.

She’d already done her homework with a headhunting agency. Turns out, she wasn’t the only one gunning for

Kason.

There were a bunch of rivals popping up just in Halinston, not to mention all the competition in Beriton and Harborton.

She might get kicked out of the game before it even started, since Kason straight-up said Lynch Group wasn’t worth his time.

“Ms. Lynch, I’ve got some news on what you asked me to look into,” the assistant said.

Heather got up and walked over to the window. “Go ahead.”

“Kason’s last job was in Mieashy. He took a company that was on its last legs and turned it around in just two years. Now it’s worth one billion dollars. When he left, he cashed out $0.5 billion and kept a five percent stake,” the assistant reported.

Chiara’s fingers tightened around her phone, almost without thinking. Those kinds of terms? She’d never be able to put something like that on the table.

Half the profits? Shares? Not a chance.

“And with the other companies he worked for, he pulled it off in just six months flat. From what I found, Kason always parted ways with his old bosses on good terms. Never burned any bridges or stirred up drama…”

the assistant went on.

“Ms. Lynch, Kason’s a real powerhouse. If you actually manage to bring him on board at Lynch Group, we’ll be back in the big leagues in no time.” the assistant said, practically buzzing with excitement.

Heather took it all in, calm and collected. After a moment, she said, “Alright. Keep this strictly confidential. Don’t breathe a word to anyone until I give the signal.”

“Ms. Lynch, we’ve got to look at the bigger picture here. Once Lynch Group is back on top, money and shares are totally negotiable. We can always work something out,” the assistant said.

Heather took a deep breath, steadying herself. “Yeah, I know.”

After hanging up, Heather just sat there, lost in thought.

‘Should I take the gamble?’ Heather wondered.

Heather gave Marcus a call.

“Hey, Heather?” Marcus answered.

“Grandpa, how’ve you been?” Heather asked.

“I’m doing just fine, sweetheart. You and Chiara don’t need to worry about me at all,” Marcus replied.

Heather replied softly, “Grandpa, I have to make a big decision right now, but I’m really not sure if I should do it.”
