Chapter 145
Only one older housekeeper spoke up. “Stop staring. Go do your jobs.”
“Yes, ma’am,” the others replied.
The older housekeeper shook her head with a sigh when she saw Titus had actually been there all night, then turned and left.
As the sun rose, Charlie and Adele had returned to their room the night before, but neither of them had slept a wink.
They exchanged a glance. Charlie’s face darkened with displeasure. “He really stayed there all night?”
Adele’s tone was flat. “Don’t you know your own son?”
Charlie fell silent for a while, then said, “If he keeps doing this, he’ll wreck himself.”
Adele just glanced at him, then turned and went upstairs without another word.
Charlie knew where she was headed and didn’t stop her. Guilt, anger, and a touch of heartbreak all tangled inside him.
They’d already lost their grandchild; losing their son was out of the question.
Then, Adele knocked on Debby’s door.
“Come in,” Debby called out.
Adele pushed the door open and saw Debby sitting up in bed, slowly turning her rosary. She looked like she hadn’t slept a
wink either.
“Mom, did you not sleep at all last night?” Adele asked.
Debby glanced at her and asked, “Is he still downstairs?”
“Yeah, he’s been down there all night.” Adele walked over and nodded.
Debby slowly closed her eyes. “What’s really going on between Titus and Chiara? How much do you actually know?”
Hearing Debby ask that, Adele knew she couldn’t keep hiding it anymore.
Debby might be old,’ she was sharp as ever. There was no way she hadn’t noticed Titus’s feelings for his wife.
“Alright, let me tell you everything,” Adele said quietly.
After a few minutes, Debby listened in silence, then slowly opened her eyes. She gazed out the window and let out a long, heavy sigh.
“Sometimes, fate just doesn’t work out for some people. Maybe those two just weren’t destined to make it,” Debby murmured.
It wasn’t that they were meant to cross paths but not stay together, it was just that their fate wasn’t strong enough to carry them all the way to the end.
“Mom, even if you want them to get divorced, you should at least let Titus see Chiara. She’s got so much bottled up inside, and there are all these misunderstandings. You don’t want her carrying that for the rest of her life, right?
“At least let him talk to her, let her hear his side. Even if she can’t forgive him, maybe it’ll help her feel a little better and clear things up between them,” Adele said.
Debby glanced at her. “You’re feeling bad for him just because he spent the night downstairs?”
Adele looked at her, a bit helpless. “Mom, he’s your grandson too. Don’t you feel sorry for him at all?”
“If I’m feeling sorry for him, then what about Chiara?” Debby shot her a look.
Adele went quiet. Indeed, Chiara had no parents left, and Marcus was gone too.
“Mom,” Adele said softly.
Debby closed her eyes again. “I’ll ask Chiara what she wants. If she insists on not seeing him, I won’t make it happen.”
Adele relaxed a bit. “Can I talk to Chiara for a moment?”
Debby glanced at her and nodded. The moment the call connected, Debby asked how Chiara was feeling.
“I’m fine. You really don’t need to worry about me,” Chiara replied.
Then, Adele took the phone and said softly, “Chiara?”
Chiara hesitated for a second, but then called out, “Mom.”
Adele’s voice was gentle, full of relief. “I’m just glad you still call me that.”
Chiara was silent for a few seconds before asking, “Do you have something you want to say to me?”
They both knew exactly what this was about.
“Do you want to hear it?” Adele asked, still checking with Chiara.
The silence dragged on for several minutes, making it pretty clear Chiara didn’t want to hear any of it.
But in the end, she said quietly, “Go ahead.”
“Titus is back. He’s been staying awake all night just hoping to see you, even for a moment. Would you give him a chance to talk to you in person?” Adele asked softly.
Chiara turned her head to look out the window. Sunlight spilled across her bed, warm and bright. The doctor said getting some sun every now and then would do her good.
She squinted a little and eplied, “I’m sorry, but I never want to see him again. Not now, not ever. I’m really sorry.”
Adele heard the gentleness in Chiara’s voice, but her attitude was firm. She could tell Chiara was truly heartbroken.
Thinking of Titus still not moving downstairs, Adele could only sigh silently. “Chiara, you don’t have to apologize. None of this is your fault.”
Chiara didn’t say a word, so Adele just handed the phone back to Debby, her heart heavy with helplessness.
Debby glanced at her. “You can go now. Close the door behind you.”
Adele gave the phone a look before getting up and leaving.
“Chiara,” Debby said softly.
“Yeah, Grandma?” Chiara replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
“What are you planning to do next? Is there anything else I can do for you?” Debby asked again.
Hearing the warmth in Debby’s voice, Chiara gripped her phone a little tighter. “Grandma, I’m sorry!
Debby sighed softly. “Sweetheart, you don’t have to apologize. You’re a good girl, and you’re so strong. I’ll always be here for you.”
Chiara had asked Debby to keep it a secret that the baby was still safe, just so she wouldn’t have any more entanglement with Titus, not even the slightest possibility.
That was why she came up with this plan.
She knew it was unfair to Debby, and she felt guilty about it, but she just couldn’t see another way.
After all, the baby she was carrying was the Goodman family’s own flesh and blood.
“Grandma, when the baby’s born, I’ll send you lots of pictures,” Chiara promised. “So you can see him grow up, even if we’re not together.”
Debby’s eyes reddened with emotion. At her age, not having her grandchild around was a real heartbreak.
“Alright, alright, I’ll be waiting,” she still replied gently.
Then, Chiara said, “Grandma, I want to leave Halinston.”
Debby didn’t look surprised at all, like she’d known this was coming. “Have you decided where you want to go?”
“Yeah, I’ve already made up my mind,” Chiara replied.
“Alright, I’ll help you make the arrangements.” Debby’s voice was warm and reassuring.
“Grandma, thank you so much,” Chiara whispered.
By the time Debby came downstairs, it was almost noon. Charlie and Adele were waiting on the couch, and as soon as they saw her, they both stood up.
Charlie spoke first. “Mom.” Adele echoed softly.
Titus slowly raised his head to look at Debby, his face impossible to read, eyes red-rimmed from a sleepless night.
“Grandma, I need to see her. Please, let me see her, just once,” Titus pleaded, his voice hoarse and desperate.
“She doesn’t want to se ou. Not ever,” Debby replied.
