When She Ended It With Divorce (Chiara and Titus) novel Chapter 144

Chapter 144

Titus hadn’t meant to keep it from Chiara. He just didn’t want to make her unhappy or add to her worries.

He felt obligated to Elaine, but there was no real emotion involved. Deep down, he knew even that sense of obligation had grown faint.

The only reason he went was her sister’s words about Elaine. “Elaine is a great dancer. One day she’ll perform for thousands. Titus, will you come see her?”

That promise to her sister meant he could keep his distance from Elaine, but when she was in trouble, he just couldn’t turn a blind eye.

He never meant to betray the promise between him and Chiara. He just… messed up.

That night, sleep was a luxury few could afford.

As darkness deepened, Adele stepped out for water and saw Titus still unmoved. She walked over. “Get up.”

Titus didn’t say a word. He kept his eyes shut and remained in his place.

Adele frowned, her tone icy. “Even if you stay here all night, there’s no chance for you two. If you knew it would end like this, why get involved? I warned you about the Jensen sisters, did you ever listen?”

“I just want to see her once,” Titus rasped, his throat dry. “Even if she wants a divorce, she needs to say it to my face. Or I won’t sign the papers.”

“It’s out of your hands now. In this family, nobody dares defy your grandmother,” Adele said.

Titus’s forehead veins stood out as he slowly reached out, taking Adele’s arm. “Mom…”

Adele’s throat tightened, her eyes unfocused as she looked at her son, caught off guard by the moment.

It felt like ever since Titus grew up, moments like this, where mother and son were truly close, had become so rare.

He’d always acted so indifferent and distant with his parents, never really caring much.

Adele knew her son was really asking for her help now.

Her lips pressed into a thin line as she knelt down beside him, gently holding his arm. “Did you know Marcus’s last words before he passed were hat he wanted to see you one last time?”

Titus froze, his gaze dark and heavy, locked onto her.

Adele looked at him quietly. “But no one could ever reach you. Your phone never went through.”

Titus slowly closed his eyes, his voice so hoarse it was nearly breaking. “What about those photos?”

“The ones from the hospital room? You know exactly what you did in there,” Adele said, her attitude softening just a bit, but her voice still frosty.

He was her own son, of course Adele felt her heart ache for him.

Titus’s jaw clenched, a bitter, self-deprecating smile flickering across his face. “She broke her leg and started starving herself. I couldn’t just ignore it. I promised…”

“That’s right, you promised her sister you’d take care of Elaine. But Titus, what about the vows you made to your own wife?” Adele pressed.

Just thinking about the baby they’d lost made Adele’s heart twist with grief.

“Do you realize you were supposed to be a father by now? Your grandmother was already buying for the baby. Do you know how much all of us, Chiara included, were waiting for that child?” Adele’s voice shook with sorrow.

Titus felt like a knife had been plunged into his chest, the pain so raw it was hard to breathe, like he was drowning in his own

blood.

“I swear, I didn’t know. If I’d known, I never would’ve gone. Titus’s voice was rough with regret.

Adele squeezed his arm and sighed. “I never told your grandma the truth about you and Elaine. If she ever found out you abandoned your wife and child for someone who means nothing to you…”

Obviously, it would break Debby even more.

“Mom, I need to see her. I have to see her,” Titus pleaded.

Adele shook her head. “It’s not that I’m hiding anything from you. Your dad and I honestly have no idea where Chiara is. Your grandmother took care of everything herself.”

“Even when Marcus was buried, none of us went to the gravesite. We just waited outside, keeping our distance. Your grandmother felt so guilty, she said she couldn’t bear to face him,” Adele said.

Hearing that, Titus finally released Adele’s arm, his gaze dropping, voice steely and cold. “Then I’ll just keep staying here until Grandma is willing to tell me where Chiara is, no matter how long it takes.”

Charlie showed up at some point, and as soon as he heard Titus, he immediately scolded him. “Stop this nonsense! Are you just going to be here and forget about the company?”

Titus slowly closed his eyes again, his expression unreadable. “With you in charge, it makes no difference.”

“What the hell are you doing?” Charlie blurted out, his anger barely contained.

But Adele shot him a warning look, and Charlie instantly clammed up, just huffing in annoyance.

“Your mom’s right. If you knew it would come to this, why get involved at all? Now look at us, our grandchild is gone!” he said bitterly.

Titus felt a sharp pain between his brows. clench tight.

Titus’s voice was low and rough. “Why don’t you both go get some rest?”

Adele gave him a long, searching look. “If Chiara doesn’t want to see you, and seeing you would only hurt her more, would you still want to see her anyway?”

Titus’s face looked ashen, his forehead slick with sweat. Suddenly, he snapped, his voice sharp and commanding, “I told you both to go get some rest!”

The couple paused, and Charlie’s expression soured. He pulled Adele close, wrapping his arm around her. “He’s a brat. If he

wants to stay here, just let him be. Let’s go get some rest!”

Adele opened her mouth, but couldn’t find the words. She just gave Titus one last, lingering look.

Titus hunched over, one hand pressed to the floor as a stabbing ache spread through his chest, relentless and suffocating.

A memory flashed through his mind; Chiara at the airport, seeing him off before his flight.

“How long will you be gone?” she’d asked.

Titus had replied, “Three days, if nothing went wrong.”
