Chapter 177
When Chiara heard the waiter’s flattering words, her hand froze for a second. She instinctively looked up. She locked eyes with Titus. Their eyes met again.
But after just a few seconds, she quickly averted her gaze. Wayne had clearly heard it too. He didn’t even need to turn around to know who the waiter was referring to.
He shot her a worried look and asked in a low voice, “How about we switch to another restaurant?”
Chiara shook her head, cut off a small piece of steak, chewed it, and swallowed before speaking. “No need, Wayne. The food here is actually pretty good, and it’s already on the table. It would be a shame to waste it. I’m fine,” she said.
Wayne watched her for a moment, and seeing that she seemed calm, he finally relaxed. “Good. After we finish eating, I’ll take you home,” Wayne said.
Chiara picked up her juice and took a sip. “No need, Eunice-”
Before she could finish, her phone rang. She checked the caller ID, turned to look out the window, and picked up. “Hello?” she said.
“I think I just saw that bastard Titus walk in. Did you guys run into him?” Eunice asked.
Chiara replied quietly, “Yeah.”
“Damn, what are the odds? Why do we keep bumping into him everywhere? When did Halinston get so tiny? Or maybe we just picked the wrong day to go out?” Eunice joked.
Eunice’s last comment made Chiara laugh softly. She said, “Maybe…”
As she spoke, Chiara glanced at Wayne across the table and explained, “It’s Eunice. She’s downstairs waiting for me.”
Eunice interrupted, “Why’d you have to tell him?”
Wayne was taken aback and glanced out the window. “She’s actually downstairs?”
“Yeah, she is,” Chiara said.
“Why isn’t she coming up? Tell her to come join us,” Wayne urged.
“Wayne says you should come up,” Chiara relayed to Eunice.
Eunice was speechless. In the end, Eunice did come up, but as soon as she walked in, she saw Titus and Yvonne.
Yvonne saw her too, and her eyes dimmed as she lowered her head. ‘Seriously, I should’ve checked my horoscope before heading out. Next time, I swear I’ll double-check. Why do I keep running into them? What the hell?’ Eunice thought.
Chapter 1/
Just as she was about to walk past, she heard Yvonne’s voice, thick with emotion. “Let’s break up,” Yvonne said.
Eunice nearly tripped over her own heels, but she kept her head down, acted like she hadn’t heard a thing, and hurried past thein. Instead of leaving, she ducked into a seat right behind them.
Yvonne stared at Titus’s blank face and said, “Now that your ex-wife came back with your kid, and your family never liked me anyway, maybe we should just call it quits. Honestly, I think kids need both their parents around to grow up healthy, so I’ll just step back and let you guys be a family again.”
Titus finally looked at her, his expression cold and detached, just watching her drama unfold.
Yvonne still couldn’t accept it. She leaned in a little, her voice dropping to a whisper. She pressed, “Is it because you still haven’t gotten over your ex-wife? Is the only reason you’re with me because of her?”
Titus gave her a cool look. “If you want anything, talk to Paul. Just don’t push it.” That was Titus cutting her a break, knowing when to back off.
Hearing that, Yvonne finally relaxed a little, but she couldn’t help sounding a bit bitter. “But I really do like you,” she said.
Titus shot her a look, not even bothering to figure out if she meant it. “Your dreams matter more than I do,” he replied.
Yvonne couldn’t help but look up at him and quietly asked, “So, can we still be friends?”
“No,” Titus replied.
She figured as much. Her mood sank as she lowered her eyes. “If you need help, go to Paul,” Titus added.
That was basically a promise, the one thing Yvonne had wanted from him. If she’d ever held onto any hope before, after visiting the Lynch residence, she completely changed her mind and scrapped all her plans.
Her eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Mr. Goodman, you didn’t take me to your ex-wife’s house on purpose yesterday, did you? You already knew your folks would be there, right?” Yvonne asked.
Suddenly, it all made sense to her. “You… You just wanted me to back off? You already guessed why I came back, didn’t you?” Yvonne came back to get him, not to marry him, but to make things real between them, physically.
Titus gave a faint smirk. “You’re pretty sharp.”
Yvonne just stared at him, lost for words. Her face grew conflicted. “Mr. Goodman, so you’ve just been stringing me along this whole time?”
“So, did you enjoy being played?” Titus asked.
Yvonne was at a loss for words. She had gone from B-list to A-list overnight, something anyone would celebrate, yet she still couldn’t make sense of it and ended up blurting out what was on her mind.
“So what’s your reason for all this? If you’re still hung up on your ex-wife and want to patch things up, shouldn’t you be acting more like the devoted husband, trying to win her back?” she asked.
“Don’t bother trying to figure it out. Just leave,” Titus said.
Yvonne knew her little drama was finally over. She took a deep breath. “Alright, the longest TV show I ever did was only four months anyway,” she said.
With that, Yvonne stood up and wiped her eyes. “Let’s not see each other anymore. My parents always said. they didn’t want me ending up as some rich guy’s stepmom. Maybe fate just wasn’t on our side.” Choking back tears, she got up and hurried out of the restaurant.
Eunice, who’d been eavesdropping, her eyes went wide as she hunched over and crept forward like she was on a secret mission.
Chiara froze, watching Eunice scuttle around like a mouse. “What are you doing?” Chiara asked.
Eunice put her finger on her lips, gesturing for her to lower her voice. Wayne looked over, curious, and Eunice just gave him a casual wave. “Hey, Wayne,” she said.
“Hey, Eunice. What’s going on?” Wayne asked.
