The moment Elaine’s eyes landed on Titus, she felt a jolt of surprise that left her momentarily speechless. It was as if time had paused just for her, allowing the gravity of the moment to sink in. But then, shaking off the daze, she hurried over to him, her heart racing. “Titus, what happened to your face?” she asked, concern lacing her voice.

Titus merely glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “What brings you here?” he replied, his tone cool and detached.

Elaine peeled off her mask and sunglasses, fixing her gaze on him with a mix of worry and determination. “I came to see if you were okay,” she said, her voice firm yet gentle.

He let out a short, dismissive laugh that echoed in the quiet space between them. “What’s so interesting about me anyway?” he quipped, as if her concern was unwarranted.

Her eyes darted to the angry, raw scratches marring his cheek and neck, a surge of worry flooding her heart. “Did Ms. Lynch do this to you? That’s just too much. Why does she always resort to violence?” Her voice trembled slightly, a mix of frustration and empathy.

With a tender yet hesitant gesture, Elaine reached out to touch the wounds, but Titus smoothly turned his chair away, his gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made her heart race.

The sudden withdrawal of her hand left Elaine feeling flustered and awkward. She cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure. “Titus, was what Ms. Lynch said yesterday for real?” Her voice was barely above a whisper, laden with uncertainty.

Titus held her gaze for what felt like an eternity before rising and striding over to the floor-to-ceiling window. His tall, broad silhouette stood stark against the bright light streaming in, and Elaine felt a flutter in her chest, an almost overwhelming urge to wrap her arms around him.

Suppressing that desire, she stepped closer to him, stealing glances at his profile before mustering the courage to ask, “Are you really going to get divorced?”

He scoffed lightly, a cool sound that sent a chill through her. “Did I ever say that?” he replied, his tone nonchalant.

Elaine froze, momentarily stunned. “But yesterday—” she began, confusion evident in her eyes.

“What she thinks doesn’t matter,” Titus interrupted, his voice steady and unwavering.

Elaine stared at him, her mind racing to process his words. She bit her lip, disbelief washing over her. “What do you mean?” she asked, searching his face for answers.

Titus turned his calm gaze toward her, an intensity flickering in his eyes. “Don’t you get it?” he asked, his voice low and almost haunting.

Doubt crept into Elaine’s expression, her brow furrowing. She looked away, gathering her courage to speak her mind. “I really don’t,” she admitted, her heart pounding.

“Titus,” he called softly, and her heart trembled at the sound of her name on his lips. A rush of anxiety flooded her, but she couldn’t resist turning to face him once more.

His face remained calm, yet there was an unshakeable steadiness about him. “From the moment I chose to marry her, splitting up never even crossed my mind.”

Elaine felt the color drain from her face, disbelief washing over her. “That’s impossible. You don’t love her,” she protested, her voice quivering with emotion.

“If I hadn’t made up my mind, do you really think I’d decide it on a whim?” Titus replied, his tone resolute, leaving no room for argument.

Panic surged within Elaine. She had never taken Chiara seriously—not once—because she had always believed that Titus and Chiara’s marriage lacked the foundation of love. To her, Chiara was merely Mrs. Goodman, a title that held little significance.

Elaine edged closer to him, her voice trembling with urgency. “No, you’ve got it wrong. That’s not how it is,” she insisted, desperation creeping into her tone.

Titus took a measured step back, maintaining his calm demeanor as he locked eyes with her. “I’m not getting divorced. I never even considered it. So, stop wasting your feelings on me. Go find someone who’s actually right for you. Live your own life and find real happiness.”

Her heart sank, a wave of shock washing over her. “Titus, you know exactly how I feel about you. How could you just tell me to go fall in love with someone else? It’s so heartless.” Tears began to well in her eyes.

His expression remained unchanged, each word colder than the last. “Wilbert said something true once,” he remarked, his tone devoid of warmth.

Elaine’s eyes widened, a sense of dread creeping in. “No,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

“You’re a decent girl. It’s not right for you to get mixed up with a married guy like me,” Titus stated coolly.

“No, I don’t want to hear it. Just stop,” Elaine burst out, panic rising in her chest. She couldn’t bear to hear another word from him right now.

Titus waited for a moment before continuing, his voice steady. “From now on, if you need anything, talk to Paul.”

Elaine’s face turned ghostly pale, disbelief washing over her as she stumbled back a few steps. “What? What does that mean? Are you just giving up on me?”
