For a fleeting second, Sloane's breath hitched.
Her mind flashed back to that comic book from her teenage years.
The young officer in full uniform, carving a bloody path through chaos and war just to stand before the woman he loved and declare that she was his only salvation.
A man of iron, melting into total devotion.
The only difference was that the fictional officer did not have a harem of seven wives.
Any man who had seven wives and still chased after a movie star was hardly a saint.
Sloane gave her head a subtle shake, forcing herself not to get swept away by Julian Sterling's romantic declarations.
Julian was still waiting for her answer.
Sloane twisted the lace handkerchief in her hands, desperately trying to figure out an exit strategy.
Thankfully, the singer from the stage finished her set and shimmied over to Julian, her voice ten times more cloying than Sloane's.
"Commander, you finally made it!"
Before anyone could react, she boldly dropped right onto Julian's lap.
Sloane's eyes widened.
It was just an immersive game; did they really have to go this far?
As Julian tried to pry her off, the woman only wrapped her arms tighter around his neck. "Commander, it's Queenie, the star of The Palladium. Last time you were here, you mentioned you wanted to hear opera. I went and learned it just for you. Let me sing for you now."
Without waiting for permission, Queenie began to croon a theatrical melody right in his face.
Sloane glanced at Julian, but his eyes were still locked onto her.
She seized the moment, offering a dramatic pout. "Commander, one second you're promising to leave your wives, and the next you're entertaining another woman. Clearly, you don't mean a word of it. Go have fun with Queenie!"
Julian tried to grab her hand, but Queenie effectively blocked him.
Sloane couldn't help but wonder if Queenie was actually a friendly NPC sent to help her faction.
Taking advantage of the tangle, she quickly slipped away.
