Who Knew My Assigned Mechanic Husband Was a Big Shot? novel Chapter 24

That infuriating man.

Creating such thick sexual tension—did he corner other players against the furniture like this, too?

Sloane tilted her chin up. "Of course I was. But I've changed my mind. I'm done waiting for you."

She slipped sideways, trying to squeeze past him. As she moved, her body brushed flush against his solid chest, enveloped by the rich, intoxicating scent of pine.

But the moment she was free, his hand shot out, capturing her wrist.

His voice dropped to a low, seductive murmur right beside her ear. "Meet me under the old oak tree behind The Palladium in thirty minutes."

"...Fine." Sloane agreed verbally, but her mind was entirely fixated on her mission.

*

Following her mission prompt, Sloane brought the command seal to a dimly lit café.

She had never met her contact, but she had a passphrase.

She was supposed to look for a man wearing a black hat and scarf, reading a copy of *New Era Weekly*.

Stepping into the café, Sloane scanned the room and spotted a man fitting the exact description tucked away in a corner booth.

Her heart leaped into her throat.

Even though it was just a simulation, she felt a profound respect for the real historical spies who had lived this reality.

One had to be constantly vigilant. A single mistake meant not only losing your life but taking down the entire network with you.

Taking a deep breath, she walked over to the man.

Sliding into the booth across from him, Sloane delivered the code. "It's been a while. Are you still selling tea?"

The man lowered his magazine and looked at her, a strange, knowing smirk playing on his lips.

An ominous feeling washed over Sloane.

Had she been compromised?

But the man replied with the correct countersign. "I have half a pound of last year's Darjeeling left. Would you like a few packets to take home?"

The code was correct.
