Chapter 21 Lunch

“Where the hell are you right now?”

Julian’s voice was ice-cold with fury-so intense that even Chloe could feel it through the phone.

“At home. What’s your problem?”

Chloe was genuinely confused.

“FaceTime me. Now.”

Before she could respond, Julian had already hung up and immediately tried to video call her.

Chloe didn’t hesitate to decline it.

Julian stared at his phone screen, his grip so tight he nearly cracked it.

In all their years of marriage, Chloe had never ignored his calls this long, never left his texts unanswered, never declined his video calls.

Julian’s mind drifted back to what Jane had told him earlier.

The thought of Chloe in bed with another man right now sent rage coursing through his veins, threatening to destroy what 7:43

Even if their marriage was fake, she was still technically his wife. He wouldn’t let Chloe get involved with another man.

Chloe had no clue what Julian’s deal was today. After she declined the first video call, he tried ten more times in a row.

She was beyond annoyed.

Finally, she just blocked his number, turned off the lights, and went to bed.

Assholes didn’t deserve to ruin her sleep.

The next morning, Chloe was jarred awake by her phone buzzing. Thinking it was Julian again, she grabbed it to hang up, but stopped when she saw “Dad” on the screen. After hesitating for a moment, she answered.

“Come over for lunch.”

The deep, emotionless voice came through, with Jane’s sweet voice in the background,

Great. More drama waiting for her.

Well, she had nothing else going on. Chloe was curious to see what Jane was up to this time.

“Fine.”

Despite being the Crawford family’s actual daughter, she and James had nothing to talk about.

James hung up right after she spoke. Chloe didn’t care. She got up, got ready, and around ten o’clock, drove to her parents’ place.

As the Crawford house came into view, Chloe remembered the

first time she’d come here.

She’d just turned eighteen when she learned the truth.

Overnight, she had a whole different set of parents and ended up in this strange place.

Before coming here, she’d imagined how her biological parents would react when they saw her-surely they’d cry tears of joy.

The reality?

James and Tina still treated Jane like their daughter, while she

their actual biological child-felt like an outsider.

Chloe laughed bitterly to herself, parked, and got out.

No one was outside, but she could hear laughter from inside.

“Oh honey, I thought you were going to stay away forever- spending all your time with your husband and forgetting about us!

Chloe froze mid-step. Ice-cold realization hit her. Just as she’d suspected-James and Tina knew about her fake marriage with Julian too.

She was the only one who’d been played for a fool all these years.

At least she’d braced herself for it. Chloe took a deep breath and walked inside.

Not only was Jane there, but Julian was too.

“You’re here.” Tina noticed Chloe first, her tone flat.

“Yeah,” Chloe responded just as coldly.

Jane had been sitting next to Tina, but when she saw Chloe, she possessively wrapped her arms around Tina’s arm. “Mom, did you make all my favorite dishes for lunch?”

“Of course, sweetie. I remember everything you like.”

“I knew you loved me the most.”

Jane acted like a spoiled little girl, all sugar and charm.

Julian stood up and walked over to Chloe. “Who were you with last night?”

His aggressive tone made both James and Tina look over.

Chloe tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, keeping her voice level. “I was home alone, sleeping.”

“If you were sleeping alone, why couldn’t you answer a video call?”

Julian’s stare felt like he was trying to see straight through her, searching for any sign she was lying.

But Chloe’s eyes gave nothing away—he couldn’t read her at all.

“Work was a nightmare yesterday. I was up late dealing with it, and when I finally got home, I just wanted to crash. Then you called acting like a complete jerk-why would I want to talk to you?”

Chloe rolled her eyes and sat down on the couch, ignoring
