Chapter 25 Get Pregnant

“I saw what happened online between you and that Jane,” Logan said, his voice stern. “If you have any respect for me at all, you’ll end whatever this is with her immediately. You’ve been married to Chloe for five years-five years where she’s been nothing but a perfect wife and daughter-in-law. How could you humiliate her like this?”

He’d been sick recently and had only just seen the news about Julian and Jane when he started feeling better. That’s why he’d called them all back to the family house-to defend Chloe.

“Grandpa, there’s nothing between Jane and me,” Julian said, avoiding his grandfather’s sharp gaze.

“Do you think I’m stupid?” Logan struck his cane against the floor. “Before we found Chloe, you and that girl were joined at the hip. If I hadn’t put my foot down, she would’ve already been part of this family.”

“What’s wrong with Jane?” Lauren couldn’t help defending her. In her mind, Jane was better than Chloe in every way.

“She’s manipulative,” Logan said bluntly. Jane’s little games. were obvious to him. If she were really such a good girl, she wouldn’t have found excuses to stay with the Crawford family when Chloe was found. Her tactics could only fool Julian and Lauren.

“I don’t care what happened between you and Jane before. Chloe is your wife, and you’ll treat her right. And if you

still want your inheritance, you two better give me a great-grandchild within the year!”

Logan delivered his ultimatum.

Both Julian and Lauren’s eyes widened in shock. They’d been planning to put their scheme in motion soon, but the old man’s meddling had just thrown everything off course.

Chloe stood by the kitchen doorway, hearing every word. She understood Logan’s intention-he wasn’t really expecting her to get pregnant, but wanted to help her secure her place in Julian’s life.

But how could he know? She meant nothing to Julian. They just wanted to get their inheritance quickly and get rid of her.

After dinner, Chloe played chess with the old man for a while. Logan couldn’t stay up late, so by eight o’clock, the housekeeper helped him upstairs to bed. Before leaving, he told Chloe, “Sweetheart, stay here tonight. I’ll have someone make your favorite buttermilk biscuits in the morning.”

Chloe loved those biscuits, especially the way her foster mother Mary used to make them. Logan had somehow gotten the recipe, and they tasted remarkably similar.

At nine o’clock, a staff member came down to say that her and Julian’s room had been prepared. Julian was nowhere to be found-he was in the study talking with Michael and Lauren-so she went upstairs first.

Their wedding photo still hung on the wall. Julian looked sharp in his tux, but even in their wedding portrait, he wasn’t smiling.

She’d asked Julian at the time if he didn’t want to marry her, and he’d said he wasn’t feeling well. Now she realized-it wasn’t that he felt sick; he just wasn’t marrying the person he wanted.

Chloe climbed onto the bed, took down the wedding photo, and tossed it aside. Then she headed to the bathroom. When she came out after her shower, Julian had already entered the room and stood looking at the discarded photo with a strange

expression.

“Why did you take down our wedding photo?” Julian asked, watching as Chloe towel-dried her hair.

She wore a white nightgown that showed her curves, her face flushed pink from the shower steam.

Why else? Because it makes me sick to look at.

Julian’s throat tightened as he remembered his grandfather’s words, catching the scent of her body wash.
