Chapter 27 The Next Morning
“We haven’t gotten the shares yet. We’ve endured five years-are you really going to throw it all away in the final month?”
His voice was sharp with irritation.
Jane gritted her teeth, desperately wanting to tell him about Chloe’s recording. But if she did, Julian would resent her even more. He’d probably rush straight back to comfort Chloe.
She swallowed her anger and wrapped her arms around Julian’s
waist.
“I know I messed up. I just… I don’t want to be alone. Baby, it’s just the two of us tonight…”
She rose on her tiptoes to kiss Julian’s throat, her hand trailing to his belt.
The message was clear.
His desire, already pent-up from his encounter with Chloe, ignited under Jane’s deliberate touch. Julian’s eyes darkened as he kissed her hard.
“Easy… mmm…”
Jane moaned softly. But fury was burning in her chest.

She couldn’t wait another month.
When she was abroad, she could ignore it. But now she was here, forced to watch Julian cater to Chloe’s every whim because of Logan. There was no way she could stand by and let that happen.
If Julian wasn’t going to tell Chloe, she’d make sure Chloe figured it out herself.

Late that night, Chloe woke for water and habitually checked her phone.
Just as she’d expected.
There it was-something very interesting indeed.
Jane had posted an hour ago: a selfie from bed, wearing a silk camisole that showed her collarbones and clear kiss marks on her neck. Beside her lay a man, his back to the camera, face
hidden.
But Chloe recognized Julian from the details.
It seemed today’s message had worked perfectly. Jane was already getting impatient.

The next morning, she found Logan, Lauren, and Michael already at breakfast.
Seeing Chloe come down alone, Lauren’s face soured. “What kind of wife gets up this late? Your grandfather-in-law’s nearly finished eating.”
Logan immediately frowned. “Young people work hard all day. Chloe finally gets to rest-let her sleep. Where’s Julian? Still in bed?”
Since Julian had left late last night, Logan didn’t know about his midnight departure.
Chloe’s smile was perfectly calibrated-wistful, hurt, resigned. “He got a call and left. Probably work stuff… He’s been so busy lately.”
Logan set down his fork with a sharp clink. He’d specifically asked them both to stay the night so they could work on their marriage.
Chloe stayed. Julian left. What the hell?

Logan turned to Michael with authority. “Transfer Julian’s projects to others. He needs to focus on Chloe. His priority right now is giving me a great-grandson!”
Just like that, he suspended Julian’s work at Summers Group.
Though Michael was the CEO, Logan still held real power. The old man’s word was law.
Michael nodded reluctantly.
Lauren protested, “Julian’s being responsible with his work. Chloe said herself he left for business-”
Logan’s icy stare cut her off mid-sentence. She wilted immediately, breaking into a cold sweat.
She could only glare hatefully at Chloe. Manipulative little bitch! Making the old man turn my son.
Chloe ignored Lauren’s death stare and sat down beside Logan, serving him a bowl of oatmeal. “I’m fine, Logan. Julian cares so much about the company. If you pull him from the project because of me, he’ll resent it. Besides, he already explained everything to me-I’m not upset.”
“Really?”
Really. When have I ever lied to you?”

A pang of genuine sadness hit her. Once, she’d truly wanted to be a good daughter-in-law. But Julian and his family had pushed her too far.
“Fine.” Logan relented. “Since you put it that way, we’ll let it slide. But tell him not to blow off his wife for work.”
“Absolutely,” Michael and Lauren chorused with forced smiles.
Chloe enjoyed her breakfast, satisfied. Her message was clear: make her unhappy, and Logan would bench Julian in a heartbeat.
After breakfast, Chloe drove back to her apartment, changed clothes, and grabbed lunch. She checked her texts with the landlord again-still no response despite her several messages.
