The price of betrayal (Jack and Ashley) novel Chapter 438

"Grandpa, a lot of our partners from Eastern State are coming along for the family reunion, and everything's set up in Rio Village. Yet, you seem… a little off. Is something bothering you?" asked Hoover.

Harold, his hair graying and his demeanor commanding, sighed softly. "Hoover, returning to one's roots is natural, but it can also feel unsettling. I don't know how many of the people I once knew are still around. And with my parents gone, even though I've done well for myself, I find myself wondering—who am I really trying to impress?"

His voice was heavy with a kind of wistful sorrow—a sentiment that many could relate to. The hope of returning in glory, of giving one's parents a sense of pride and dignity, only to find them gone. It was a regret that could not be denied.

"If Great Grandpa and the others were watching from above, I'm sure they'd be very pleased to see this," said Hoover softly. "Grandpa, we're almost at the village entrance, and the welcoming party is already waiting. Would you like me to go ahead and handle things while you stay in the car?"

Harold shook his head gently. "That won't be necessary. I'll go down myself."

As he spoke, the car came to a stop, and Harold stepped out with Hoover's support. Once they exited the vehicle, the influential figures from the village immediately gathered around them, showering Harold with warm greetings and lavishing Hoover with praises. The flattery was so obvious, that it was practically written on their faces.

Meanwhile, inside a nearby MPV, Wayne, Melody, and Megan watched the scene unfold. They had arrived before Harold, but Wayne insisted they stay put and not enter the village just yet.

He knew full well that the welcoming party wasn't for them but another branch of the Greene family. It would be nothing short of awkward if they drove in now.

A glimmer of envy flickered in Wayne's eyes. He murmured softly, "That must be Uncle Harold. I almost didn't recognize him. He's returning in glory, isn't he? The whole village and all the big names from the enterprises are out there to welcome him. Must feel great."
