“I’m married. Please don’t show up in my life again,” Catherine said, her voice cool and steady.
“Married?” Waldo let out a sharp laugh. “To that engineer? Do you seriously think he’s good enough for you?”
“That has nothing to do with you.” Catherine’s tone went even colder. She hated how he always looked down on Lawrence.
“Nothing to do with me?” Waldo’s face twisted, his eyes sparking with anger. “He stole my fiancée. How could that be none of my business?”
Just then, headlights swept across the driveway. A black SUV pulled up to the gate. The door opened and Lawrence stepped out.
He wore a dark gray suit, looking like he’d just come from some important event. He glanced at Waldo, his voice low and frosty. “Waldo, what are you doing here this late?”
Waldo turned to glare at Lawrence. For a second, he was caught off guard by the confidence Lawrence carried. There was something commanding in the way he stood, something sharp and unshakable, like someone who’d seen his share of battles and come out stronger.
But Waldo brushed it off and snorted. Lawrence might look the part, but he was still just an engineer. Waldo had dozens of those working for him.
“Just an engineer, and you think you deserve to walk around dressed like that?” Waldo said with a smirk.
“What’s wrong with being an engineer?” Lawrence raised an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth lifting in an easy smile.
“Quit pretending you’re some big shot. Do you really think Catherine’s impressed by any of this?” Waldo rolled his eyes.
On the other side of the gate, Catherine had heard enough. She pushed the gate open and walked quickly to Lawrence. Before Waldo could react, she reached up, wrapped her arms around Lawrence’s neck, and kissed him on his solid, stubbled jaw.
