After the Fall A Leap into a Stranger's Arms novel Chapter 66

Catherine clung to Lawrence’s hand as they stepped into the private dining room, half-hiding behind him. She could feel her nerves buzzing, cheeks already warm before anyone even spoke.

“Ah, this must be Catherine! You’re even prettier than your photos.” Adelina’s voice was gentle and welcoming, instantly putting Catherine a little more at ease.

Catherine’s face flushed deeper. She managed a shy greeting. “Hello, Mom.”

It came out a bit awkward, but Adelina didn’t seem to mind at all. In fact, she looked absolutely delighted. She eyed Catherine up and down, and though she’d been annoyed at Lawrence for marrying without warning, seeing Catherine in person seemed to make up for it.

“You sweet girl, come sit with us.” Adelina reached over, taking Catherine’s hand in hers.

Catherine set a box of tea on the table. “I heard you like tea, so I brought some for you. Just a little something.”

Adelina waved her off, but her smile only grew. “You didn’t need to bring anything. We’re just here for dinner.” She gave Catherine another once-over, her eyes sparkling. “Lawrence is lucky he found you.”

Catherine ducked her head, embarrassed. Adelina might have been dressed simply, but she gave off this unmistakable air of someone who was truly cultured. Lawrence had mentioned she was a history professor at a university, and it showed in the way she carried herself.

Once everyone settled at the table, Adelina turned her attention to Catherine, her voice full of concern. “Lawrence tells me you work at Nexus Dynamics. Is it a stressful job? Are you getting enough rest?”

Catherine shook her head quickly. “Not at all. I really enjoy what I do.”

Adelina leaned in, lowering her voice a little. “And is my son treating you well? He isn’t giving you any trouble, is he?”

Catherine’s cheeks felt hot again. If anything, Lawrence was too good to her. She shook her head, smiling. “He’s great. Really.”

Adelina shot Lawrence a pointed look, then nodded as if satisfied. “That’s what I like to hear. If he ever upsets you, you let me know. I’ll set him straight.”

Catherine sneaked a quick glance at Lawrence, a tiny grin tugging at her lips. It felt pretty nice to have someone on her side.

Catherine was stunned. She opened the box and gasped softly. Inside was an exquisite emerald bracelet, so clear and vivid it almost seemed to glow. It was obviously worth a fortune.

“Mom, this is too much. You should keep it. It’s too precious,” Catherine protested, feeling overwhelmed. She’d always thought Lawrence’s family lived modestly, but remembering his grandfather’s old house, she realized there had been wealth in the past. This must be their most treasured heirloom. How could she possibly accept it?

Lawrence leaned in and spoke gently. “Take it. It belonged to my great-grandmother. It’s meant to be passed down, and now it’s yours.”

Catherine blinked back tears, carefully closing the box. “Thank you, Mom. I’ll treasure it.”

Once dinner was over, Catherine got into Lawrence’s car. Adelina stood by the curb, waving with a big smile. “Come over for dinner again soon, Catherine!”

Catherine nodded from the window, her heart lighter than ever.
