Chapter 224
“I’m squirming in my seat, trying to hold my scent. Yeah.” I yawn, “Just feeling a little tired, I was up drawing on a cast all night.”
“You’re good with kids,” he says with a smile.
“Am I?” I frown. Kids don’t usually gravitate towards me until I put in some effort.
“Yes, the kids at the foundation love you. They’re always asking where you are when we show up.”
“Oh, that’s because they take me in small doses.”
“Don’t sell yourself short, Ellie.” He says, his tone laced with disappointment. “You’d be great even if they spent a whole week with you.”
“I’d die, I love them but…” I pause, a sharp pain piercing my stomach, accompanied by a strong wave of warmth spreading around my body. “Kids are a lot of work, Rowan.”
“You’ll change your mind when you have your first.” He confidently says.
“Do you know something I don’t?” I ask, an eyebrow raised at him.
“No,” he laughs. “It’s just a thought. I’ve seen how you interact with children, and you’re good with them. You’d be even better with one you grew.” He says, a smile lingering on his lips. This isn’t about me, it’s about him, he looks like he’s imagining a child of his own right now.
“That was a dazed smile, Rowan.” I shift, my head tilted. “Do you like kids?”
“Love them,” he admits. “I’d like to have one someday, but the when is up to Dani.”
“That’s sweet.” I force a smile, lowering the windows even further. I need a bath, my skin feels like I’m being put on and off fire every few seconds. I know this feeling, I’ve had it a few times, and it’s nothing I can’t fix.
Soon, we arrive at the packhouse. I can’t get inside fast enough, but I do wait for Rowan, and we enter the house together. When I see Kingston standing by the staircase with his arms crossed over his chest, flexing his biceps, heat pours between my thighs. I clench them, the feeling fading when I see Audrey just a few feet away from him. I did see her when I entered, but I’d hoped it was a trash can with a blonde wig on it…a girl can dream, can she not?
The trashcan-Audrey lifts a hand to wave us. “Hi, guys.”
“Hi,” I look between them, trying to estimate how fast they could pull away from each other, given they were kissing when we entered the room.
Kingston shakes his head, as if reading my mind. He steps forward before I can deny the unspoken accusation. Hey baby,” he pulls me into his arms. “How was your night?”
“Perfect.” I smile.
“Did you cool down?” He asks, caressing my cheek with his thumb,
I nod, my gaze focused on the woman I just found him with, “Warmed right up,
“I can feel that,” he smiles, moving his hands down to my neck.
Rowan clears his throat, staring at us strangely. “Are you done?”
“Yeah, just need to pack our bargaining chips.”

“Right, let’s get on with it now.” He says, leading the way.
Kingston kisses the side of my mouth, saying nothing as he follows Rowan up to his office. Audrey is grinning still, if anything, her smile is wider now that we’re alone. She looks over her shoulder and starts coming close to me. “You look rough, Squeak. What’s wrong? Tough night?”
“No,” I casually say, staring right at her. “I had an amazing night.”
“I thought you didn’t.” She says, still smiling, she knows I saw them last night, she saw me last night, and she knew exactly where I was sitting while she sucked my husband’s face. “Kingston told me you had a fight because of me.”
“No, whore.” I snap, not giving her the satisfaction of not knowing she ruined my night. “We had a marital disagreement, and your name happened to come up, don’t fool yourself.”
“Oh,” she nods. “I thought you were obsessed with me, seeing how much you love talking about me.”
Talk about her?
“Did he tell you that too?” I pause, “You shouldn’t believe everything you hear.”
“No, he didn’t tell me.” She shrugs, flipping her hair off her shoulder. “I happen to know that every time you fight with him, it’s about me, and I feel honoured that you think of me this much, but-”
“Shut up,” I hiss. “I don’t care about you Audrey, you insert yourself in my spaces, and I forget your existence until you’re in my sights again, barking like a rabid dog. That’s what angers me.”
She nods, “I thought it was the fact that no matter what you do, you’ll never be worthy of taking my place.”
“Excuse me?”
“You can’t replace me, Squeak” she confidently says, her voice low and venomous. “And I guess by now you have finally started to realise it haven’t you? You’ll never be what I am to this pack, or to Kingston…”
I blink, resetting like her words have no effect on me. “I don’t need or wish to be you, you’re nothing but an annoying, spoilt two-faced bitch. What would I want with that, hmm?”
“It comes with the one thing you most desire,” she says, her grin widening. “Kingston’s unconditional love.” “Alpha Kingston,” I correct her. Regardless of what they do in their private time, I expect her to respect my orders. “Oh please,” she snorts, rolling her eyes. “Like forcing me to call him Alpha changes anything.” She snickers.” He loves me, the man adores me, that’s why he came when I called last night, that’s why he didn’t give a damn about what you’d do.”
“Are you done?” I stare blankly at her, the weight of her words hanging heavy, but not more than the anger brewing within me. “Because I don’t care, Audrey. I’d hand him and this title you ache for to you, but why would I go against the moon goddess when she thinks you’re unworthy of both?”
